Not style over substance. A balance of both.
I've been thinking about purchasing this for a while now. After seeing it many times on YouTube videos (J.Hoffman, Normal Persons review etc) I pined for a sleek looking grinder that didn't look like a coffee machine on my worktop. Most of the top rated ones in this budget range have bulky loaders on the top, and have a 'blender' look to them. Go up a bracket, and your in high end territory where, whilst some look as phenomenal as the Ode, they certainly cater for the pro which I am not!On this topic, aside from aesthetic (which I must admit will be behind most peoples purchase) - I also wanted to up my pour over game. I was using a manual burr grinder which was under £20 from amazon, which I adjusted a few times to get to an ideal grind size. I was finding that allot of husk and boulders were present in my grinds, and the ability to dial something in that was consistent was not possible.I decided to purchase this after viewing a few more reviews on Youtube, and seeing that it was designed with a quality conscious home brewer in mind.It came next day from prime, and....wow.After unboxing, first thing I realised is how heavy this machine it. Its a chunk of a machine, and for good reason. With such a small frame, and such a speedy grind, it keeps the machine grounded and I think adds to the premium aesthetic. The machine looks perfect on the counter. Smart, sleek and attracts little attention. Build quality is brilliant for a v1 product, and the famous dial feels satisfying, whilst looking like something from an SLR camera lens.On first grind, I noticed a machine wobble before settling in, after which it didn't wobble again. This, I think based on other reviews, is the burrs settling in which is a thing. No issues on this front since I've used it a few times. So, my first brew. Using a V60 filter, medium roast, set to 1.5. The grind came out in about 5 seconds, with auto off in a few seconds after. I was shocked at how quick this was, and how much time this will save me in the morning. The cup is a thing of beauty, with a magnetic base that swoops into place. Very on trend and avoids grounds missing the cup if your distracted. On this point, allot of reviewers commented on the amount of static this grinder (and others) generate. Given the smaller form factor of this grinder, it has the potential to create allot of mess (and reviewers here have mentioned this also). With a little research, you can avoid this mes entirely by storing in a droplet of water into your beans before adding to the grinder (RDT method) which reduces the static and gives you a clean grind. The coffee grounds were super consistent, and I would probably nudge this closer to 2 for my preference.Fellow also supplied a little brush for cleaning, which is equally well designed and weighted (not a brush expert but I liked the attention to detail on it).Overall, this is not style over substance. Its a balance of both. It looks the part in a modern kitchen, and is built for someone obsessed over making the best cup of coffee they possibly can, without replicating a coffee shop set up (which as we all know is support impractical).I recommend this grinder to anyone who is aiming to improve their coffee, are already ticking every box (buying fresh beans, weighing single doses, temp controlled water, nailed the method for pour over / filter). If you lack a pro grinder, this is the one for you that makes for a pleasurable experience when making coffee. If, however, you require something quick cheap and easy and are not fussed about the industrial design, this is not the grinder for you. A portion of this price is the modern design. I fell in love with it, and felt that paying a little more for a sexy looking bit of coffee kit was worth it for me, however some may disagree and opt for (arguably) better grinders that look ...normal. In addition, you could spend a touch more and enter the pro-ish range of grinders (Niche etc) that grind down to espresso and are notorious and well known grinders for pros. For me, this is perfect in my kitchen / coffee set up. Its immediately improved my coffee and I get to look at the wonderful thing every day.

So messy
Ok I took the plunge and bought it. It looks as nice as I hoped. I've been using it daily for about a week and the grind is very good and consistent. It is also not too loud.I'm taking a star off for the mess. It leaves so much ground coffee on the kitchen counter and somehow under the jar. Every time I make a coffee I have to do a quick wipe or vacuum. It isn't annoying me (yet?) but I imagine it could annoy other people.

The best for this price range
I'm so happy with this grinder. It looks beautiful, it functions perfectly and fast. I enjoy my cafes!

Quiet mornings with a hint of static
I purchased a Gen 1 machine on offer. This grinder although costing roughly the same as my previous machine has a more uniform grind and produces better coffee. It is also significantly quieter, which is a bonus. It does have the less desirable burr set and lacks the anti static feature of the Gen 2. However, for me this was a small consideration given my wish to change the burr set and the excellent price.

Expensive, but first impressions … worth it.
Like it’s looks and it’s quiet. It’s easy to use and not messy. It is still not run in … need to run 10 lbs of beans thru it … so not grinding at finest end of range. Grind seems good to date. Will only update if promising first impressions are not fulfilled.Six months on … never able to grind to finest particle size on the dial as the burr grinders seem to interact more aggressively than a chirp. Also the auto switch off at the end of a grind cycle does not reliably switch off. Not disappointed enough to send it back but …

An embodiment of a four-star compromise
A device designed with such finesse that one might mistake it for a miniature monument to modernist architecture, perched atop your kitchen counter. But before you are swept away by the industrial allure of this machine, allow me to unpack a symphony of virtues and vices worthy of four stars—no more, no less.Let's talk chaff, shall we? No, I don't mean the pointless domestic patter that usually precedes your morning brew routine. I'm talking about the tiny fragments of bean husk that this contraption liberally scatters around. It's a performance worthy of a ticker-tape parade, albeit one you didn't ask for nor particularly want. And, oh dear, what's this? A scratched lid right out of the box? It's like finding a scuff mark on a brand-new pair of Italian loafers. Distasteful. The Ode's auto-stop feature also tends towards the moody, throwing the occasional tantrum like a conductor losing control of his orchestra. Sometimes it stops on cue, sometimes it doesn't. One moment it's a maestro, the next a befuddled amateur. As for the lid on the grind canister, it’s a flimsy affair. Pliable and improperly fitting, it's a fine example of when form and function fail to shake hands. If I wanted something this flexible, I'd buy a yoga mat. Or an open return.Yet, for all its foibles, the machine is a triumph of aesthetics. One look at it and you're reminded of Bauhaus principles—form follows function, or in this case, nearly does. It stands there, begging to be Instagrammed alongside your artisan sourdough and designer tea towel. It’s also remarkably "fire-and-forget." Like a self-assured chef, it takes over the task with minimal guidance from you, granting you the freedom to perfect your latte art or read the morning papers in relative peace. The little cleaning brush that accompanies the grinder is a charming touch. It's the sartorial pocket square to an already well-dressed ensemble. Useful and stylish, a small redemption for its other trespasses. So, there we have it. The Fellow Ode Brew Grinder. As sophisticated as it is flawed, an embodiment of a four-star compromise between brilliance and blunder. Would I recommend it? Certainly, but keep a broom at the ready, and perhaps lower your expectations just a smidge.

In love
Have used it for almost a year now. No faults and nothing but consistent grind and fresh coffee since buying. The manual says it's not suitable for espresso, but i haven't had any issues by using the finest grind. depends on the espresso machine you have i guess.
