Q: If you have the switch flipped and the ratchet is holding something in the air then you release the handle, will it spin wildly and drop the item?

Yes and it’s not safe. I was lifting about 140 lbs so I was able to hold it and lower it by hand but it would not ratchet down. I would not buy this item. It’s to difficult to control either up or down hard to move the switch for up and down movement I felt like the ratchet was controlling me and me not controlling the ratchet
