Q: Are they water proof?

Yes they are for normal wet weather, not so much for wading in deep water.

Q: Is the boot safe for metal detectors?

I flew to Europe and back, with out setting off any of the detectors

Q: Should I opt for a different size if I'm a woman? There's no mention of women sizing.

Usually there is a 1.5 inch difference between men and women's foot sizes in length. I found these boots to be a half a size too big in men's length. Half hour you have a subtract 2 in off your shoe size and that would be the size I would order.
