Q: How are these self watering?

It "self waters" by automatically pulling water from a well (at the bottom of the white planter) to the soil. The black insert (where the plant goes) is doesn't go all the way down to the bottom of the white planter. When you loop the string that comes with the item through the bottom of the black insert, the string hangs down to the bottom of the white planter. You do have to manually add water to the white planter, but as long as there is water in the white plant, the string will pull that water up into the soil in the black base.
