Q: I can't see how to separate the chest part from the waist harness?

Yes, the top part of the harness can be easily separated from the waist belt. At the back is a metal buckle and the front has a carabiner. I have use the harness for tree work with chainsaw. It's very well made and reliable. The SOB name is a bit strange and maybe off putting but I am very happy to recommend it.
