Dragon Ball Super, Vol. 1 (1)

I finally got to read DBS! I grew up watching Z in the 90s-2000s and haven’t caught up to the Super series yet, but the beginning was a great and exciting start where we get to see Whis and Lord Beerus. Goku and Vegeta are back with even more stronger power-ups and the tournament for earth starts now! I can’t wait to pick up the next volume and watch them fight for victory.

The long wait is over, Dragon Ball Super's manga is here and boy does it cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. It manages to cover Battle of God's, briefly go over the resurrection of Freeza and even start the tournament between universe 6 and 7. But despite covering that much the pacing doesn't feel super rushed.Though the manga wasn't drawn by Toriyama, Toyotaro the new artist does a great job of giving the series the classic Dragon Ball look and feel. It's also fun that manga manages to add additional details to the anime's events. In short this is a must read for fans of Dragon Ball.For those unfamiliar with the Dragon Ball series, Super might not be the best starting point as it expects you to be familiar with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Also a note for anime only watchers of the series you will notice that some names of characters are different, so that might take a little getting use to.

interesting, diverges from the anime.battle of gods arc goes by much faster and honestly some of the charm of beerus is lost.resurrection F is only mentioned in passing and is basically skipped.I’m alright with both of these factors because I imagine toyotaro would rather you just watch the films in their full glory and then continue on to the rest of the story which is well paced and comfortable (the Universe 6 arc)this manga is not bad at all and idk who could be toriyama’s successor if not toyotaro.champa and vados are introduced to the reader much sooner which is good, especially to help flow from battle of gods into U6 Tournament.I suppose my review sort of stands for the whole Super manga as a whole, but I would recommend buying it.(Unless you already have Super on DVD, in which case honestly you’re not missing much. If you don’t have the anime, though, definitely get the manga and watch the show for free online somewhere)

The Dragon Ball Super anime series let us see again our favorite characters from the Dragon Ball Franchise. A new story, new challengers and enemies. If you followed the anime through crunchyroll or Funimation you know that it was really good. Now we have here the same story but it is told in a different way.Let me explain it for you. Akira Toriyama the creator of Dragon Ball is helping producing the new material, but he just gives some ideas or some story line material to the anime producers and the mangaka for this version (Toyotaro) to interpert. Then, the anime producers and mangaka make their own interpretation of the story and that is why you may have some slightly differences between the anime and manga. The producers have their versions and Toyotaro them. One is not better than the one, and both are really good. The manga has a wonderful art almost as good as Toriyama. So you can know that you are gonna enjoy this manga even if you already watched the anime.

This is great for fans of DB who have already watched Dragon Ball Super's anime, but if this is how you plan on starting out, I'd recommend watching atleast the first few arcs. This book has so many more extra fun scenes and stuff that you don't get to see in the show, some provided helpful context for certain characters and changes that are otherwise glossed over in the anime, but the book does skip an entire majorly important arc. Otherwise super fun read, can't wait to work through the manga ;)
