Q: Are there replacement spools and/or can an empty spoil be reloaded with embroidery thread?

Don't know. It didn't work out of the box.

Q: A lot of the reviews are directed toward the threading, but how does the rest work? I'm not interested in the threading at all.

The twisting is super cool and really works. Just hook two strands of hair into the twisting piece and it does all the rest. Really neat little gadget!

Q: What age group is this recommended for?

If they are using it themselves I would say 7-13? I would have loved this when I was in middle school or maybe 4th/5th grade. But really any age can use the twist feature and a parent could use this on a younger child to create cute hairstyles.
