The 5 stars is for the quality of these pencils. I was disappointed that they weren't in a variety of hardnesses, but they're really good pencils, just all of them are soft. The fact that they're woodless means that they're great for shading, will last a long time, will still be entirely usable if broken, and can be kept sharp for details. I generally use big square "crayon" type pieces, and these will be a lot of fun. They make nice dark black marks as per compressed charcoal, but aren't as messy as what I've been using. They came packaged in a cardboard tube, and every single one survived shipping with no breakage, and even had sharp points on each.

Woodless charcoal pencils are my preferred medium for drawing, and these are excellent pencils. The downside is that they are very brittle and fragile and must be handled very carefully. And they are impossible for me to find locally. So this is my first and last set of them. They were sent to me via USPS in an Amazon envelope with minimal padding, and they were loose in a plastic bag in the mailer. So, essentially, they were sent to me via USPS with almost nothing to prevent their breakage. The mail carrier dropped them from a distance of about a foot onto the concrete porch, but I cannot blame her; she didn't package them and there is nothing to indicate that the contents were fragile.

None were broken...that is amazing lol. So I burn through charcoal like John Kerry's jet, and I liked that the package included ALL SOFT...saweeeet. but after all these years, hundreds and hundreds of purchases from them guys those guys and these guys, I finally got a set of charcoal without one single crack in any of them...and that my friends deserves celebration. I'll buy again just to see if I just got lucky lol. Anyway, quality is actually quite impressive....rich expressive tones ..and I felt immediately comfortable with how much pressure i needed to convey my thoughts. I really love the whole no mess but for soft charcoal i felt it was not as soft as I had expected. It also has a few hard spots once you get down to the wrapping area because it is a bit harder than the charcoal itself so have to be careful. Other than that i do like the no mess and over all it is very nice and easy to handle. Thank you.

I go through black like crazy, so I needed extras. I love that these are woodless so I always have color.

only one charcoal pencil came broken but i kind of expected that since they’re softwoodless charcoal pencils so they’re more delicate. the softness of the charcoal is nice and the charcoal is very spreadable across paper. i would compare the softness of the charcoal to a willow charcoal stick but with a bit more density. overall they’re very good quality & once i run out i’ll probably get more from here!

I use almost exclusively soft charcoal for my art along with a set of makeup brushes for shading so I wanted to love these pencils, but almost as soon as I started to use them they snapped one after the other. I’m not the most delicate person, but even a looser grip was enough to snap these in two. Even setting them down with the smallest amount of force seemed to break them. Sharpening was also quite difficult for the same reason. It’s a shame because the charcoal quality was actually great for what I use it for. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone lacking a light touch.

I bought them for my daughter for Christmas and she says they work great for her greyscale work.
