Yes. I have tried with a Stanley knife but found making a neat cut difficult. It cuts well using a fret or jig saw as it easy and simply to get curves as well as straight cuts (ensure that the plastic is supported to cause a split) I found using this method I could obtain a cut that would accommodate two pipes!

If you screw the little plastic things provided to the wall they will flip over onto the lip of the drain cover where it meets the wall. I would try the fit first of all before drilling anything. If this does not work try putting a thin wooden batten screwed to the wall and screw the drain cover to that using small screws through the lip of the cover itself.
