Q: I bought two of these and am having the same issue with both of them--no dimming when plugged in to string lights. How to correct?

When you set up the dimmer make sure the blootooth and the wifi is on.

Q: Can the default state for a plug be set to power on in the event of a power outage? I would want it to pass power and not default to off.

Don’t think so. This is a smart switch “Alexa, turn on the lights” and it is extremely good at what it does. However, it is must receive a command as it would have no way to know turn on just because the power shut off. What you need is a generator that powers the houses necessities.
