An excellent Hi-Res player
I've had this Shanling M1s for a few weeks now, and so far, it's great! I think it's one of the better players at this price point by far. The build quality is great, it feels high-end compared to others I've tried, is nice to hold at a decent size and has a solid build. The screen took me by surprise though, it's fantastic, much sharper than others! The UI is nice and simple too, easy to add/sort music, and it supports .lrc files for lyrics which is a nice addition. The sound quality for mostly .flac electronic and rock is great, with crisp treble and mids, clear vocals, and I didn't find the bass too heavy whilst being punchy enough. I'd definitely recommend this M1s (and the matching case from the same seller, I went for the brown case with the silver player).

great little hi-res audio player
I was a Cowon user for many years. Their more budget-friendly audio players were the right combination of price, performance, and portability. My last Cowon player began having file corruption issues after many years of faithful service. Unfortunately Cowon exited the high-res audio player market around 2021, so I had to look elsewhere for a new device. Enter Shanling and their small form-factor M1s.When I look for a portable player, as well as high performance sound I want a small form-factor and good battery-life. There's no point having a portable player bigger and heavier than your phone when your phone can do the job (albeit it with sound/battery life compromises). The M1s is half the height of your usual phone, but a little thicker. Still pocketable either way. The build quality is excellent. Touch screen is responsive. The non-Android OS is basic, but usable. Most of the stuff in the menus will be set-and-forget, so you won't really be navigating through it too often. There's a pull-down menu that has the more frequently used options which is very handy. Having a square player with a rectangular landscape screen take a bit of getting used to, it's still a bit odd-looking IMO. The tactile control buttons are a welcome addition in a world where touch screen is everywhere. You can control the player in your pocket without looking at it. The volume wheel/power button is fine, although the wheel is a bit loose IMO and I do find myself accidentally knocking the volume from time to time. I use my player with both standard 3.5mm earbuds and 4.4mm balanced IEMs. I tried using my Bluetooth earbuds but I had stange connectivity issues. The player almost needs a direct line of sight with your BT headphones. When I had my player in my trouser pocket the sound would often break or distort. Holding it in my hand, outside of clothing I had no issues. Fortunately for me I prefer wired for my audio, but it's still a strange thing to have happen.Battery life is, fine. I play a mixture of 320 MP3 and FLAC. No lyrics. Paired with my balanced IEMs I'll get maybe 6-8 hours over the course of a few days before I charge. With BT on I got far less. I keep wifi off and I don't stream audio. I guess I'm spoilt when it comes to battery life as my last Cowon player could go for maybe double that before needing a charge. It also didn't have wireless capabilities, or 4.4mm support, or a more complicated audio circuitry so maybe those play a part?Overall the M1s is a great little hi-res player, which I've adapted it to my needs despite it's quirks. I was also able to purchase this on sale, which was an added bonus.

Great little player
This is a great little player. It has a good soundstage, and listening to music through it sounds very engaging. I am very pleased with the volume output as it can get very loud. The loudest I can tolerate is about 70% volume, and I have some hearing issues. The EQ function is really good too, much better than other players like the Hibby R3 Pro Saber for example which I sent back. It doesn't lower your volume but actually accentuates the frequencies very well and actually adds more volume. I initially had a couple of problems with lock screen and adding certain files and reached out to customer service. They couldn't have been more helpful in helping me iron them out. I brought it for £200 which is a bargain and the black one is now selling for £169. I reckon that's a steal. Highly recommended.

A Couple Of Annoying Glitches
Despite all the superb sound reviews - of which I agree, I am having to return mine because of a glitch in the software. It kept showing: 'Unknown Artist/Album". I tried every which way to find out what was wrong. (i) I did a factory reset. (ii) I reformatted the SD Card. (iii) I tried various ways of loading the SD Card, with folder, without folder and double folder but it was persistent - it just would not delete. I even triple checked all my tracks by loading only one album in case a rogue track had Got in but no..it just would not go away. I even went as far as to wipe the HD card and run MacOs First Aid to check the card.As for using the wi-fi to update it. Not a cat in ..... chance! If your router has a mixture of 25 characters - like mine does - you could be there all day trying to enter them in a very tiny keyboard. Ditto setting the clock. Oh dear!I am really sad because I wanted a player that wasn't Android based. It is certainly well built. So much so that I even bought a leather case for it. Alas, it was in vain especially having spent months researching as many players that I could afford. I thought, 'This is the one'.Must say, the title scaling was superb. Nothing cut off - like the Mechen DAP. Even the longest of titles automatically scrolled horizontally across the screen.I think I'll now look for a rugged phone that has good music playbackOh... I tested it with. Beyer Dynamic 32 ohm DT770 Pro enclosed headphones. Loud or whatI! :-)
