Amazing art and story
Amazing art and story. Would definitely recommend to people who love strange, dystopian-type worlds, weird lovable creatures and interesting characters, and stop-motion animation. Loved this.

Hard To Recommend
Junk Head is probably worth watching, but even if you think you know what you're in for, it'll be a mixed bag.Fans of stop-motion are generally used to a movie being more of a technical and visual marvel than a deep narrative, but there are still some expectations. Balking most of those expectations, Junk Head is pretty much just a technical marvel where stuff happens. There are exceptions, and the movie is hardly without merit, but the Achilles' Heel of it is that if you aren't interested in animation or sound design, Junk Head will probably bore you. Conceptually, you've got a barely-human creature sent to the depths of an alleged Utopia to search for a way to save his race, and thematically you've got a thought experiment on what it means to be human, but in practice, you've got a movie where a guy goes to places, fails to do things, winds up in another place, and that process repeats until the movie is over. The core idea is compelling, and I'd put money on the animation standing for a long time as a high watermark of the style, but this doesn't really stand on its own as a movie. The story feels like a series of Cul-De-Sacs with how often it loops back to the same path with nothing accomplished, and the focus on world design means that there isn't enough action or character development to keep that cyclical structure interesting. If you were to try to use Junk Head to introduce your friend to stop-motion, that friend would be unlikely to watch another stop-motion film again.

Watch it more than once to pick up the unusual stop motion effects.
Beautiful stop motion but sad with and incomplete ending

Profoundly Quirky & Brilliantly Obscure
I was not anticipating a film of this length & depth. I am startled by the dedication of talent behind this painstaking work. To imagine the labor involved in the production process is staggering & the scope of this craft is just mind numbing. Highest respect to this true craftsman!

An Impressive Japanese Stop Motion Sci-Fi Horror/Comedy Film
This is an awesome Stop Motion film and a complete surprise to me! I see it came back out sometime in 2017 but now has a Blu-Ray release. I picked this up at complete random after seeing some of it on YouTube and was super impressed! Made almost entirely by the hand of its single director Takehide Hori along with help from Atsuko Miyake, its a crazy non-stop fever dream of mutated freaks, scientists, monsters and a human-head robot thing struggling to survive in this strange underground hellhole. Please BUY this release! It includes a Bonus behind-the-scenes video which showcases the filming process and its absolutely crazy to see how much work Hori has put into this project - from the creation of the puppets and hilarious gargle-ly dialogue - to even the editing and post-processing effects! It's a gargantuan effort that deserves to be seen. You just don't see a lot of films like this. The animation itself typically isn't as expressive as more mainstream stop motion releases, say, something like Laika studio movies. It still has a definite charm though, and also does contain some amazingly fluent movements in some scenes. The action is wonderfully directed and the editing in tightly done with only a few weirdly cut sequences. What the director really nails is the atmosphere and the creature designs. You really feel like there is a lore to the world and it's inhabitants, even if the story is somewhat barebones. The biggest critique I can give is that it unfortunately ends too soon! It feels like the budget was finally sapped at the last moments and the camera was forced to stop. It almost feels like the first part in a series, which I would definitely be keen on seeing. I can only hope!

This is a fun movie to watch (if you like this sort of thing), and the animation is excellent.
