Q: If it's pink from absorbing the color from the shrimp flake food, is it still working? Can I wait until its dirty (brown)?

Purigen will turn different shades depending on your food, pets and general water quality. The key is when the purigen is dark, it needs to be recharged. It might be dark brown, black or even magenta. The key is the value and saturation of the color. If it is light pink, it doesnt need to be recharged. A properly stocked, or under stocked tank could go 6 months before the purigen needs to be recharged. I have 2 turtles in a 160 gal tank and i recharge mine every 3 months.

Q: How you recharge the purigen?

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard, Prime, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well.

Q: Is this reef safe? And can it work with Phosguard or carbon or any other?

Yes, it is safe for reef. You can use it with those but in my opinion carbon is unnecessary with purigen. Purigen works great itself

Q: How many 'the bags' would i need?

I used a 2 liter container for 2000 gal pond. It's 250ml. for every 250gal of water. This has very fine beads and will go thru most mesh bags. I bought the Purigen bags and each hold 250ml. Purigen can be regenerated by soaking in bleach water and rinsed well. I added chlorine remover to my final rinse and air dried my bags before placing them back into my pond.
