Stanley has always been a good name.
The last time I used a Stanley plane was over 50 years ago, when I did "Pattern Making" at school. I was surprised how in expensive it was to purchase, compared to what I expected. It maybe another 50 years until I use it again! But it was a good investment.

Stanley Sb4
I was given a Stanley Sb4 by a friend, I flattened the sole sharpened the blade and put it to work, it's a nice little plane, lightweight and with a sharp blade and correctly adjusted it works a treat, as long as you know your grain direction and with any cutting tool used as intended, it will serve you well. Stanley make good stuff It's a household name if you have trouble using this tool check your technique.

Junk
A friend of mine recently bought an SB4 in B & Q and showed it to me.I have never seen anything like it. It is NOT a plane. It is a plane-shaped object.I sharpened the blade and made it cut, but there is no proper support for the blade, so it chatters, horribly, at the slightest imperfection in the wood. Adjusting the blade is awkward and imprecise. It is truly junk and I amazed that any company would put its name to such a thing.B & Q should be ashamed to foist this rubbish onto the public. It is certainly not fit for purpose.
