Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery

Way beyond what was ever taught when I was in grade school...
Having recently traveled through Montana and having visited the Historical Society museum in Helena, I felt in need of a bit more detailed information on some of Montana's more important history. Lewis and Clark were featured at the Museum, so when I returned home I began shopping for a quality documentary to watch. I chose Ken Burns'. A great choice. The depth of this documentary alone places it head and shoulders above any study of Lewis and Clark I engaged in during grade school, or even college for that matter. The film is expertly and diversely narrated, and some of the footage is breathtaking; at times I felt almost as though I were a member of the Corps of Discovery. The scholars who provided the commentary throughout the film were clearly very emotionally invested in every aspect of the story, helping to give the ending its hint of tragedy. I felt a sort of longing when the post-expedition lives of some of the members of the Corps were described. Highly recommended.

Amazing Documentary
This is an Amazing documentary. I learned about this documentary in college. I had a teacher in college that was totally in to Lewis and Clark. This teacher was one of the nicest teachers that you could ever have. He would do anything for his students. As long as you came to class put some effort in to class and the homework you would pass. We watched this video and did a paper and powerpoint on Lewis and Clark for this class. Ken Burns is an amazing documentary filmmaker. I totally suggest this documentary to everyone.

Fantastic story, had the story tellers in tears.
This is one of the most enlightening history lessons we've watched. These two guys managed to do what MOST American pioneers were unable to do - maintain peaceful relations with the native Americans. As we look back we see the truth about who did what and why. I'm not blaming anyone for being less than they could have been but there are great lessons to be learned if we "invest" some of our time going over our history so that we too don't have to keep on repeating the same mistakes, over, and over.Look up any parts you may think are wrong or controversial on your favorite search engine, there are plenty of comments, each of us must follow their own path to the Truth!

Beautifully produced documentary - and long
Beautifully produced documentary - and long, which gives you the sense of going on the long and adventurous journey along with the Corps. While Lewis and Clark and company suffer through this amazing path of discovery, with all the tremendous danger they encounter and the terrible beauty they experience (and which is swiftly vanishing forever), you can sit back and drink your hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows. (Stephen Ambrose also provides an fascinating interview, although his often interrupting interlocutor might have been better prepared and asked questions of a more subtle nature.)

Excellent Narrative of Lewis and Clark
The video is excellent and traces the story of the Corps of Discovery’s trip to the Pacific Ocean. It is narrated by Hal Holbrook I believe and it’s so well done. We have just come from a steamboat river cruise of the Columbia and Snake Rivers and learned a lot about Louis and Clark on that trip.
