Yes, in the picture it looks like 2 Rock pieces, when in fact it's just one half with a white piece of plastic insert holding the key. It's super simple to open.

Q: Does anyone know how to keep the keys from rusting when outdoors in this rock (even in plastic)?

My rock stays in garden key has never rusted.

It is not a real rock; some sort of composite material. They would have to throw it pretty hard to break a window with it, I would think.
