An all time classic!
This book in particular is the best of the James Herriot books. Written before the war in the English countryside, travel the backroads of the Yorkshire Dales with an aspiring young country vet. His daily interactions with a wide variety of farm animals and farmers. Everyone of both the animals and farm folk are wonderfully described in all their uniqueness, as our vet tries o get to know them and warm their trust. Along the way his heart is taken by a farm girl who seems to have little interest in him. Supporting our vet is a cast of characters at the home and office of the man he works for; a demanding boss, and his boss’s slacker brother, and a supportive housekeeper. The book is a warm and entertaining book of a time gone by, but should never be forgotten. I recommend this book for the young and old!

It really is 800 pages
I had left an earlier review saying that I felt misled because the book was only under 400 pages. But in fact it is two books in one and totals a little over 800 pages. And it is an excellent read!

Just good reading.
These are such wonderful stories (memoirs). Great for the casual reader, with a great blend of humor and poignancy. I'd say I love the characters but these are real people, so it is to the author's credit that we become so attached and interwoven with the characters' lives. These are flannel pajamas and hot cocoa stories. Just warm and comfortable and nostalgic and sweet. You don't need to be an animal lover either. One warning: if animals in rough shape bother you, be aware that these stories include the unfortunate as well as really happy stories of animals and people.

My family loved to watch the installments each week on public TV
The stories in this book are part of my childhood memories. My family loved to watch the installments each week on public TV. Then I read all of the books. The stories are heart-warming and inspiring. They tell the stories of daily life of a young vet in the hills of northern Britain as he grows from a newly minted vet, through his courtship and early years of marriage, and when he returns to his practice at the end of WW2. They are of special interest to anyone who has grown up on a farm or has experienced the joy of having a pet.
