Easy Log Inoculation with A Drill and Bit
These Spawn Plugs are simple to use for growing mushrooms at home. Over the years on my homestead, I have tried growing different kinds of mushrooms, some successfully and some with little success, and the plug method seems to garner the most success for me.Be aware that the logs that you inoculate will need to be in a moist wooded environment; don’t expect to be able to place these in a sunny garden and then grow mushrooms. To inoculate a log, you just need a drill and a 5/16-inch drill bit, and some sort of organic wax to seal the plugs if you wish. You drill holes 4-6-inches apart in a triangular or diamond pattern and make the holes 1-inch deep throughout the logs and then fill the holes with the plugs. You’ll likely need a hammer or mallet to get the spawn plugs all the way seated in the holes.Once you find a suitable location for the logs, it is best to occasionally “water” them to ensure that they don’t dry out. This is not the same as watering a garden, you just need to keep the logs somewhat moist and out of prolonged direct exposure to the sun.Be aware that these only work with freshly cut hardwood logs that have been cut no more than 3-weeks prior to inoculation, and not with old rotting wood. Inoculation and harvesting needs to be timed with the seasons and it will take up to a year before you can get your first harvest. Although with the log method you can get five or more years of harvest. It is best to inoculate the logs in the Springtime if you are able to time it that way.The price for these seems reasonable to me and I consider the amount of spawn you get with this kit to be a good value. There were enough plugs to inoculate a couple of 3-foot-long logs that are 6-inches in diameter. I appreciate that these come from a US company that specializes in Fungi and that these are created stateside as well. If I have any issues growing these, then I will return to update this review.

nice plug spawn
I just cracked these open today and put about 60 of them into some freshly cut oak logs. The mycellium on the plugs seemed to be fresh and alive. It arrived nicely packaged in a small bag with a filter patch. The dowels are spiral cut, providing better and deeper growth of mycellium on the plug. Obviously I won't see results for months but I feel like this is a good product based upon my inoculation experience today.
