Tested it and it works
What caught my eye on this is that the pepper Gel can be replenished with a new cartridge. The alarm and 3 red LED lights just need to be recharged and the instructions say one full charge should last a year. You can purchase a replacement canister on Amazon for $5.95. Oddly Amazon's AI doesn't suggest purchasing this when you view the item description page. I had to go search for it using "New Canister for 3-in-1 PAPASAFETY ".So I tried it since the manual says one should get 10 sprays out of a canister. I used it outside so as not to risk a mess inside. Before doing so I charged it using the short USB to USB-C cable included. A small red LED lights when charging and turns green when fully charged. Here's where the directions get a bit confusing. They say to "Turn the Left toggle switch to ON position". Left and right are dependent on wether you are looking at the front or the back of the device. I would never point something like this at my face, so looking at it from the back the power switch is actually on the RIGHT side. All that does is keep power from the builtin battery flowing to the alarm and lights which are then automatically activated when you press down under the top flap. There is a thin liquid stream of red fluid that goes about 10 feet. At the same time the siren alarm goes off and the red LEDs flash. To turn that off you have to push up on the toggle switch on the LEFT side (if looking from behind). The siren is loud but not excruciatingly so. The lights are pointed forward but I doubt they would blind anyone attacking me. I look at it as more of a way to get attention along with the siren sound.Be careful if you discharge it to not get any of the gel on your hands. I got a small amount on one of my fingers as I accidentally touched the spout after testing. It does not hurt at all, but be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and a lot of water. If I were to touch my eyes or mouth it would definitely cause pain in the mucous membrane. So you want to avoid that. And make ure you carefully wipe any residual gel off the tip after you used it.I have a couple other of these small handheld pepper spray devices I keep in the car (which the directions specifically say not to do as extreme heat can cause the contents, which are under pressure, to burst) that I have never tested as the spray can't be replaced. But I always wondered if they will work if I ever need them. So for that reason alone this is worth 5 stars to me. It's really too large to fit in a pocket, but would fit well in a purse or bag. With the top lever down it won't discharge. I've ordered a spare gel cartridge to keep with it.

Do not test on other people
Mechanically this works but I was unable to test if it does really work because you just can't spray this at someone for testing purposes. I hope I never have to use it but it's good to have.

self defense alarm and pepper spray
This is a great personal self defense tool to have just in case and for peace of mind. I made sure to read through the instructions to figure out how to properly use the alarm component. The alarm can be turned off and on, and it is very loud. This alone should scare off potential criminals or aggressive dogs.

This is perfect for inside or outside protection
I do daily runs in my neighborhood and at the park, and so far, I have never had any issues. My concern was that there are always a lot of people with their dogs running around without leashes, so I was looking for something to give a little protection for the "just in case” situation.I really like this pepper spray bottle. It's small and slides right in my side pocket on my running shorts, giving me easy access in case I ever need it. I also like that it has an alarm that automatically sounds off when you push the pepper spray button. This alarm is LOUD, I mean REALLY LOUD! You could also test the alarm by turning it on and off with the switch on the side. When I accidentally turned the alarm on while testing the on/off switches, it rang in my ears at a decimal that I could barely handle and almost gave me a migraine. It also has a cover on the top of the spray button so you cannot accidentally spray it, which is great. It comes with a USB-C cable to charge it.Outside of my nightly runs, I can also use this for protection in the house. It comes with two keychains, so when I get home, I hang it by the door in case I ever need it for that, which, hopefully, I never will.It says not to store it in hot temperatures, so I would not suggest leaving it in your car if you park outside because that will ruin it.If you are looking for something to give you a little extra confidence for runs, shopping, or at home for extra protection, I would highly recommend this pepper spray bottle.

Makes my daughter feel safer!
My daughter rides her bike and does pet sitting in our neighborhood. She likes to have this to carry with her as it makes her feel more safe. It seems to be very easy to use as well.

Loud but pink, not red!
This is loud! The battery for the alarm is USB-C rechargeable and needs to be topped off every so often. I have not tried the pepper spray function yet. I'm taking off a star because I was hoping the picture or my phone was off. The description says it is red which is my son's favorite color. Nope. It's pink. He won't carry it. I'm going to have to get him another product. If you are looking for something pink, you are in luck. If you are looking for something red, look elsewhere.
