Good reference book on software engineering
I really cannot say if it justifies the title "practitioner's approach". If you are looking for how to get things done, then this is not a book for you. You won't find any tips and tricks for project management. However, if you are a student or non software person trying to understand the software development process, then there is no other book better than this. The book starts with most basic question of difference between hardware and software. It was a question I could not explain to my parents. Finally, with the help of this book, I managed to make them understand what really the term software means. It gives good theoretical treatment to ideas and concepts in software engineering. It covers everything that anyone could possibly need. But that is the cost that book pays for some 900+ pages. Having gone through seven editions, the book nicely presents legacy and new concepts very well. Author has done excellent task of bridging the gap between old and new era of software engineering. You will find detailed discussion on both traditional waterfall model as well as newer agile models along with detailed explanation of evolutionary path between the two. And that is the main reason why I gave this book 4 starts. It will surely teach you in and outs of software engineering.Note that this is not a one night study book. It indeed is reference book. Start slow and steady but keep it going. In summary,1. If you are looking for just how, please don't use this book.2. If you are looking for what, why, when, which and how then use this book.

Good one
I read this book with a dual purpose. I am a software developer who is starting a new software engineering project at work as well as a part-time graduate student studying for a comprehensive master's exam. I found this book quite an entertaining read for this genre. It is very well written. It has also given me a lot of good ideas for my upcoming software project. This is an excellent book for someone who wishes to hone their software engineering skills.
