My new favorite textbook
I have a new favorite textbook. The Color Atlas and Synopsis of Family Medicine is a stunning comprehensive collection of photographic and textual descriptions of human maladies. Family medicine is an intensely visual endeavor, and this book offers the reader high-quality patient photos, radiographs, otoscopy, colposcopy, microscopy, and so much more, to aid in the healing process. The book is not simply a photographic atlas, however. The Synopsis that accompanies every image allows us to “see together” the details necessary to understand the condition. Each section includes an organized easy-to-use set of details: patient story, introduction, epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnosis, prevention, management, and patient education, including URL links to specific patient handouts. This system of description allows me to glean just the bare facts, if that is what I need today, or to read in more depth about the disease. The art of medicine is not neglected by the book’s editor. Sections on physician-patient relationship, abuse, drug use, and patient education all resonate with my own style of practicing medicine with heart. The section on chronic pain is one of the most comprehensive that I have read. The Color Atlas and Synopsis of Family Medicine now sits as the only book on my office tabletop, so that I can use it to look up a question quickly, to offer as reference to the doctors and nurses that I supervise, or simply to peruse when I have a minute of down time. Importantly, I can show a photo and its description to a patient to enhance our shared healing experience. This book reminds me why I chose to become a family doctor. The sheer breadth of our specialty allows any patient of any age with any symptom to seek my help. The daily intellectual challenges I face require continuous update of my knowledge base. The Color Atlas and Synopsis of Family Medicine amplifies my learning and helps me to be a better physician.Pamela Camosy, MDBoard Certified ABFMMedical director, veteran clinic groupAuthor, Healer’s Heart: A Family Physician’s Stories of the Heart and Art of Medicine

This book is what we all have been waiting for.
This book is what we all have been waiting for. The Color Atlas and Synopsis of Family Medicine, Third Edition, combines down to earth, real world photos that bring the diseases and circumstances to life and then provides evidence based recommendations for treatment and management. The chapters on the Essence of Family Medicine are heartwarming and give us hope that as Family Medicine providers there is hope for the future of Medicine and remind us why we do what we do. Some of the chapters are emotional and moving to read, especially the chapters on abuse and violence reminding us of the toll these subjects have on us, our patients and their families. The breadth of the book is excellent. One of my students asked me about Leishmaniasis. I did not have a clear recollection of the disease, so we looked it up in this book and both of us learned from the great synopsis and memorable photos. There are several chapters on Dermatology that cover just about everything that you will see in practice. The newer section on dermoscopy gave a clear concise review of how to use the scope and alert providers to what findings prompt a biopsy, and which lesions can be monitored. As we all struggle with dealing with the opioid epidemic, the book offers guidance on the differential diagnosis of substance abuse and a practical guideline for chronic pain management. Overall, this book is the complete overview that encompasses primary care and will be the new standard that other books will be judged against.Charles J. Excellent teaching and patient education resource
This book provides a comprehensive overview of family medicine especially for medical students wanting to understand the breadth of family medicine. It is an outstanding resource for teaching students and residents as well as providing easy to understand information to patients and their family members or in teaching young nursing staff. The book is well organized with patient vignettes to grab your attention. The jewels of this book are the quality and quantity of the pictures. The dermatology section alone is worth the purchase. I have received CME instruction at conferences from Dr. Usatine and Dr. Mayeaux. Their book does not disappoint.
