Good for what I wanted it for
Used these tannins to tan a section of deer hide. It wasn't enough to tan an entire hide with a single bag, so I supplemented with a few other sources. It was also more than I wanted to spend on a small piece of hide, so I used sparingly. It has a smokey, almost mesquite smell to it and the color shown in the listing is true to life. Almost a rust color. You can see the hide I tanned and some remaining tannin in the bag.It left the hide with exactly the color I wanted and help leave it smelling pleasant as well. These tannins will stain a light reddish brown, and they can mold if left in solution too long (week or more).

Great for ebonizing wood
I built an oak cabinet for the bathroom for my wife. After the doors were finished she informed me she wanted the cabinet to match the vanity and medicine cabinet (I should have expected that but was just excited to be making the cabinet myself) which are a dark espresso/black color. Since I love the grain of oak I didn't want to lose that pattern (not to mention I'd spent more money than if I'd used poplar or pine). No stains or glazes worked on my test pieces so I made an iron oxide (rust) slurry by letting steel wool soak in vinegar for several days. All woods (especially oak) have tannic acid in them naturally and when tannic acid reacts with rust it turns black. Unfortunately my oak apparently did not have enough tannic acid in it and all I was getting was mostly grey/purple-ish colors with some black splotches.I mixed this powder into distilled water almost to the point where no more would dissolve in the water and then sprayed it onto my oak pieces and let it dry. Afterwards I sprayed my cabinet with the rust mixture and WOW...it turned a nice deep black and still shows the grain of the oak.I honestly don't know all the uses of tannic acid but if you are wanting to experiment with ebonizing wood this stuff does a fantastic job. Also, the item was very well packaged and there was no spillage. Shipping time was fast too. I'm quite pleased with this product, the transaction, and the seller (and of course Amazon).

Needed 1.75 bags to tan a whole cow hide
I used it to tan a whole cow hide. First try and it was significant effort to break the hide after soaking in tanning solution for a little more than 60 days. The leather turned a dark brown, which is fine. After working, as the leather dried, the leather was still stiff in places. I used 1.75 bags for the entire cow hide.

As advertised
Purchased this for work at a museum; we use tannic acid quite a bit. This definitely does the job. Affordable, easy to use (please, always remember to use a mask!), mixes well.

Worked well prior to fuming wood
I made up a 5% solution in distilled water. A portion dissolved with mixing, but there is a considerable volume of insoluble material. I let the mixture settle overnight; I could have filtered. Avoiding the insoluble portion, I wiped the solution onto coffee wood (which has low/no tannins) using a cotton rag and let dry. I then fumed with ammonia overnight. This achieved a nice darkening. I have no reference point for competitive products, and I only needed 1-3% of what I purchased, but this met my needs.

This made my ebonizing wonderfully easy. It enabled me to get the true black I was looking for on White Oak wood.
