Excellent Summarization
A great summarization up through the Heian period. Enjoyed the concise history, but would have enjoyed more detail and the inclusion of further dating (categories jump in and out of place on the timeline). Otherwise a worthy title that provides a reasonable accounting of Japanese History.

Not Unusually, Enthralling Scores Again
For those who are familiar with Enthralling History's work, you know this author's greatness. For those who have yet to experience the pleasure of reading these books, "Ancient Japan" is as good a starting point as any title in this series. Through dedicated research and accessible research, the eponymous subject matter becomes not something about which to learn but rather a place to be transported.

Good Overview of Early Japanese History
Thorough but easy to read overview of early Japanese history. Learned a few new things I didn’t know, even though this isn’t the first book I’ve read of this era. Especially liked the last chapter which sets the stage into which the age of the shogun and samurai ruling class flourished.

Ancient Japan
This History of Ancient Japan is a real tour de force. A captivating narrative that succeeds in drawing in the reader, to understand the development of a very complex culture and polity – that traces the history of Japan from the Jomon Period to Heian Period. The history has been meticulously researched, as evidenced by the detailed bibliography, and represents a treasure trove of facts for those seeking an understanding of the Japanese people and their society. I look forward to reading the next book in the series that continues the history of Japan.Certainly a book for ones library.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

...over-wordy...
This book reveals the result of intensive research - but: the content can become over-wordy; rather than (for instance) skimming through extended details of a plethora of successive rulers, etc.Interesting details of customs and architecture.Must confess to skimming past extended descriptions of ancient folklore and fairy tales of unearthly beings! One could wonder at the Japanese character with such cruelty in these ancient times, which was later repeated against the Chinese, then again in WWII - to the calmness of the populace today?Had to laugh aloud at the ludicrous conversion of a tomb as being '15 meters (49 miles) in diameter' and another as '821 meters (2,693 miles) long'!!!
