UPDATE:I wrote the comment below and sent it to Holbein. The response they sent makes sense and now I am happy that I can use my Holbein gouache with confidence that it is opaque.RESPONSE from Holbein:Holbein does not use opaquing agents in the manufacturing process. All other companies use "opaquing agents" like talc, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide or marble dust. What the notation is referring to is that the opacity of Holbein Gouache is strictly pigment driven. This means that even in thin washes, Holbein gouache will maintain its vibrance and even color dispersion. When using "opaquing agents" thin washes or applications will result in a lack-luster color and a granular dispersion. All said, yes, gouache is an opaque watercolor. If it is something you are looking to put on in thick layers you may consider trying Holbein Heavy Body Acrylic or Holbein Mat Acrylic. Regarding Holbein Designer Gouache, simply do not dilute the tube color with as much water. The more water you use to thin, the more transparent it will become.My original comment:I should have read the fine print more clearly on the Holbein Artists Gouache.. It says "no opaquing agents added." Darn, I thought gouache was supposed to be opaque. That's why I wanted it.

I am a pretty successful artist by trade and have been for 27 years here on the West Coast. I do a lot of work for greeting card companies, advertisers, and lot of creative work showing 4 to 5 times a year via collective and one person shows, festivals, and fiestas, such as the Napa Valley Food and Wine Festival, the Festival of Arts at Laguna Hills, the Sausalito Art Festival, et al. So my mind is whirring 24/7 . This little pack of Holbein Artists Gouache is easy to pack and carry, as I often find myself with a sudden idea for a painting in the craziest places; restaurants, parks, movie theaters, family gatherings etc.The Holbein Artists Gouache Set fits perfectly in my small fanny pack along with my portable brushes, small plastic bottles of medium and water,and water color pads. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. The colors are rich, true, and well defined. So when an idea for a piece comes unexpectedly, I can whip out my kit, find a reasonably quiet spot and capture the design that I have in my head before it dissipates into thin air.. Family and friends are used to this odd behavior by now and thankfully, take it for granted. If you are like me, buy this product.

This is my first gouache purchase. LOVE them! I usually paint in watercolor, but I have been watching James Gurney on youtube and he paints in gouache, so I thought I should give it a whirl because I absolutely LOVE his work. When I first swatched these paints, I was just amazed at how vibrant they were. I was in love. They are just SO opaque and when I paint with them there is such energy! I recently tried Lukas gouache and their product just does not compare. These Holbein paints are FABULOUS. And the set is good, because it gives you both warm and cool primary colors. You can make so many colors with the mixing of these paints.Thank you to Holbein for producing such lovely paints. They are a joy to work with.

This gouache is super bright. The colors just jump off the page; they are beautiful, but I wouldn't suggest these colors for nature paintings.They are also super pigmented and that is great for when you water the paint down a ton and use it as watercolor, but if you hate staining your mixing palettes, this is a set that stains everything it touches.Overall, these paints are great. For just 12 5ml tubes for $25 is a steal, and it is great for beginners!

They're the tiniest, cutest little baby gouaches but they're very bright and pigmented. Since I do small works of art, they have lasted pretty well. Since they're so small though I lawyas have to squeeze it a little to get it open so it does get all over the cap and screw which can be potentially bad once it dries. If you want to make an investment, these are amazing. But if you don't have the money, cheaper gouaches work very well too! Don't pass those up thinking they're not effective.

I like Holbein watercolors, and I like this gouache but there's a caveat. Because Holbein does not use an opaquing agent the colors are, duh, not as opaque as I prefer when using gouache. I keep this little set at my desk at work for sketching during lunch. The price was certainly right for a set to have around for goofing off with when on conference calls.

Just Lovely. Creamy consistency, highly saturated colors. No separation of binder when you open a fresh tube. I love this stuff. And this may sound funny, but they don't have that yucky cheap gouache smell. They're a real pleasure to work with. The small size of the tubes was an affordable way to try a new brand and still have a variety of colors. After trying these, I ordered the "Designer" color set and also a tube of brilliant gold (which is glorious, in case you were wondering).

Good starter gouache set. Considering how cheap these are, this is a great set. These rewet decently. Not opaque - more like watercolor-gouache hybrid than true gouache. Bit milky on the page, probably from fillers, but still fairly vibrant. Fun for painting, not ideal for graphic work/illustration.

The media could not be loaded.  Excellent passe-temps pour un ado intellectuel ou artiste :) Acheté pour mon fils qui fait l'école à distance, surdoué de surcroit et qui se tanne à écouter ce qu'il a déjà compris. Lui permet de demeurer concentré tout en créant quelque chose d'à la fois dirigé, encadré et artistique. Je recommande fortement! Les outils sont d'une précision parfaite

Ya había escuchado de la calidad de esta marca pero al probar de primera mano las pinturas quede sorprendido. Al principio estaba preocupado por el tamaño de los tubos, pero con la excelente pigmentación en la pintura la cantidad ya no resulto un problema
