A Heartfelt Lesson in Friendship and Empathy
Reading Maddi's Fridge with my 7-year-old was an eye-opening experience. The story beautifully portrays the bond between two friends, Sofia and Maddi, while subtly introducing the topic of childhood hunger. My son was particularly moved by Sofia's dilemma of keeping a promise versus helping her friend, which led to meaningful discussions about empathy and the importance of supporting those in need. The illustrations are engaging, and the narrative is both touching and accessible for young readers. This book not only tells a compelling story but also serves as a gentle conversation starter about real-world issues. I highly recommend Maddi's Fridge to parents and educators aiming to instill values of compassion and understanding in children.

Great story.
Such a cute book with a good message about helping others and knowing when to ask for help. I’m so glad the little girl “broke her promise” and told her mom that her friend needed help. I love that they addressed the importance of telling trusted adult if a friend is in need.

Great book!
I absolutely love this book. It’s one of my all time favorites. It introduces the concepts of: helping a friend, when is it ok to not keep a friend’s secret and the reality that not all families have enough to eat.

Wonderful book on food insecurity
I used this book with a variety of ages, three-year-old through upper elementary to combine with other activities that had to do with food insecurity and homelessness. All ages were engaged by the story about two friends one that had plenty of food and one that had an empty fridge. It also talked about what a promise means. It is very well written and illustrated, and some good humor moments for discussion “ would raw eggs be good to take to school for lunch?” Loved it!
