Beautiful and fun book with warm hats.
I have knitting books to read and knitting books to use. This book is a keeper for me with stories and photographs from the Antarctica, and lovely, unusual hat patterns that could be useful in any winter locations. Visitors to the Antarctic leave garments behind which are sometimes unravelled and reknit, in a place where there are no knitting stores! There are great instructions on techniques, including how to line a knitted or crocheted hat for extra warmth, with polar fleece or stretch velvet or other suitable fabric. Get it to use or just for browsing. A unique and lovely book!

I don't knit and I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Superb! Beautiful! A page turner! This book is for everyone –men and women, knitters or not - who has been to McMurdo Station, whether for a week or ten seasons. You do NOT need to own a pair of knitting needles to love this book. Why?For the Old Antarctic Explorers, there are pages interspersed throughout the book with photos and narrative detailing tidbits of information that will result in you chuckling, “Oh, I’d forgotten about that,” as you read about the “green brains” everyone carries, or smiling as you read about and see photos of nacreous clouds, “Yep, that’s a perfect description.” These descriptive and photographic pages bring back a flood of memories for everyone who has spent time in McMurdo as the book includes pages describing what it is like to step off a plane onto solid ice and what a typical Sunday is like on the Ice. You will find yourself laughing, reading aloud, and picking up the book every few days to revisit these pages. This is the book you will show your friends in your vain attempt to describe to them what life on the Ice is like, an experience that otherwise defies description. These pages alone make the book worth the purchase and this is why non-knitters should buy this book. The second reason non-knitters will love the book is that every pattern has an introductory paragraph describing how the hat pattern (this book is, after all, a book of knit hat patterns) came to be. Once the non-knitting reader realizes this, you will then go back through the book and read about every pattern. For example, the entry for the Royal Society hat explains to the reader what the Royal Society is (a magnificent range of mountains viewable from McMurdo), or that the Shackleton hat design is based on the basket weave sweater pattern Shackleton wore in his famous photo. Like the other descriptive pages, you will be impressed that the authors created a hat called the BFC (an important warehouse) and Willy Field (an airport for ski-planes).For the knitters, each pattern is beautifully detailed, with easy instructions and photos. The book is not for beginning knitters, but really, the many pages at the end of the book that provide photo descriptions of different techniques make this a pleasure to use. Finally, the book is gorgeous. The photos were taken by Anthony Powell, famed Antarctic photographer and filmmaker. If you’ve been to Antarctica in the past ten years, you will recognize people in the photos and if it’s been a few decades since you last deployed, you will still recognize locations. If you know someone who has been to McMurdo, buy this as a gift for them. If you have been yourself, buy several books. If you have never been, but want to go, buy the book to educate yourself. If you simply love to knit, buy the book.Buy this book!

The book
I love the book, and only wish that this book came out in the early1960. I read every page twice and I loved all of the stories that came along. And believe me I shall be knitting several hats, and maybe all of them.

Beautiful Patterns and Interesting Snippets of Antartica
A comprehensive and interesting book filled with creative hat patterns and glimpses of what it is like to live and work in the coldest place on earth. The hat patterns are mostly knit in the round and many feature some form of stranded color work. One hat features crochet granny squares with knitted edges.Patterns are inventive and beautifully photographed. The directions appear to be complete and there is a techniques section in the back that covers embellishments and how to line a hat with fleece. This is a book that intermediate knitters with some colorwork experience would enjoy, but it is not too challenging for the advanced beginner.

Several fun projects and a few gems. Interesting information, stories, history and anecdotes about life "on the ice". I'll definitely try a few of these.

I downloaded this book for the patterns but loved the original perspective in Antarctic life. So much I didn't know before or had never thought about! Books like these leave me in awe of our earth and of the power of nature. & Great hat patterns, I definitely will be knitting several of these at least 😁

A great variety of hats, clear written (and charted) patterns, and a lot to learn about Antarctica. Just the kind of knitting books I love!

Inspirational!
This is a lovely book with, not only 28 hats to choose from, but some very useful tips and techniques. Most of the patterns use colour-work so very good ideas for using up stash yarns. In addition there are interesting snippets about what most of us will never experience - that is of living in Antartica. Lovely to curl up with in front of the fire and imagine the wind howling outside. Would definitely recommend to any intermediate knitter.
