Really cool Robert Munsch story about Red Hair
For Seeing Red, Robert Munsch wrote it for a student named Arie, the only kid in his school to have red-hair.A kid who gets to be the protagonist in this book. Like his friend Alex. Who wishes to have red hair, but doesn’t know how. So when he asks Arie what to do to obtain that colour, hilarious mayhem happens. Indeed, being advised to eat enormous quantities of tomatoes, ketchup, and Tabasco is definitely not the way to have red hair. Although the only thing it does is embarrass you before everybody. So when Alex realises the truth, this is when he decides to get back at his friend. In a comical way.As a fan of Robert Munsch, it is great to see him do a story after an encounter he had with a Montreal kid. For as I am from Montreal as well, it does put in mention our community as sometimes I do feel we get neglected in the international medias. Which focus either too much on Toronto or Vancouver instead. And though I noticed in certain drawings of the story that it is set in Toronto, I also think you can see this story in Montreal as well. Or in any other cities around the world. Though as a reader, I do see it as a story set on the Montreal Island. In its narrative, the story is, like all Robert Munsch books, very funny. It presents a great camaraderie between two friends who play tricks on each other, study at the same school, and live in the same neighbourhood. And what I like a lot is how the illustrator and author take time to show us their everyday life. Whether it is the homes where they live, the activities they do, and their relatives. Indeed, the images feed the readers with story elements that the text may not necessarily describe. Making this reading a visual experience as enriching as its narrative prose. For his work, Michael Martchenko has used a lot the colour red to make his artwork stand out in this book. In the food, the drinks and the backgrounds, everything was made so that there would be at least one object with the colour red. And as always, the illustrator enjoys a lot showing us the hysterical reactions of his characters, especially Alex as he devours food after food after food to the point of getting sick.As always, another great book to share with fans, but also families who want to show a story of friendship and laughs.
