Highly Recommended, feminist or not
For anyone who sometimes struggles to read because of how dauntingly long a book may seem, this is for you. Each "chapter" of this book is no more than a few pages. You can read in between classes, on your lunch break, between meetings, waiting for anything, and whatever 5 minute increments you may have available in your life.Valenti approaches double standards without an overwhelming, abrasive feminist approach. Yet, she is very realistic about these kinds of challenges facing women. As someone who doesn't always identify with the common characteristics that today's feminist is associated with, I found this book to solidify my view on feminism: equality. Acknowledging the double standards and then following them with a call to action creates an opportunity for the reader to think about how to apply what Valenti is talking about in their every day life.Granted much of the subject matter is a little more adult, I highly recommend every woman to read this. There are sections that I will share with my 12 year old cousin that I wish someone had shared with me when I was her age. There are pieces I will remember to share with my daughter, if I have one. There are examples that require me to express my thanks to my mother for raising me to be first a strong person as well as a strong woman.Ladies, I also encourage you to share what you read with the men in your life. Having a conversation about what battles women face can only begin when we respectfully include men. Take this book, immerse yourself in it, and then figure out how it manifests itself in your life.

Pretty revealing
This book helps to understand different strange "rules" that exist in society. It's interesting how I didn't analyze them, think of them and often didn't even notice them when I was growing up It seemed like just how things were. I often felt it was weird and I felt irritated but I didn't understand why. I like this book for showing different illogical double standards that exist. I can easily imagine that some men don't even think of this because it doesn't affect their lives in any negative ways and often benefits them. I do really like the men who are aware and think and feel that this is unjust though.

Jessica Valenti writes awesome feminism and this is a fantastic work of hers
Jessica Valenti writes awesome feminism and this is a fantastic work of hers. Writing about feminism isn't the easiest thing to do, there's the perfectionist critics, the 'it's outdated' critics, the 'it's not as big a problem as you think' critics and those who want to make it all about them and not look at the systemic issues. This book nails a lot of the most ridiculous double standards on the head and it's a nice sanity check for those of us who have wondered if we're in an alternate universe where no one else thinks that there's something wrong going on here. Cheers to Valenti for an awesome job well done.

I really enjoyed this book!
I really enjoyed this book and will recommend it to my niece and daughters who are coming of age. I had to remind myself not to get defensive while reading this (as a white male) at times because she never really says that not all men adhere to these double standards and that we (men) are subject to our own double standards and stereotypes but thats not what this book is about. I found her points thought provoking and her attitude wonderful as well she is HILARIOUS!!! I enjoyed 'Yes means Yes' a litle bit more but this book is much more appropriate to give to my daughters and niece at their ages and will recommend "yes means yes' when theyre slightly older.

Poignant examples of the double standard women face
It is easy to see the double standard we as women face when you are living it, but this book opens eyes to the sexism, misogyny, and other things that women have to deal with to a wider audience.

A funny and serious book.
Jessica Valenti takes on a serious and frustrating subject matter with wit and humor. Every woman knows all too well the upsetting double standards we must face in a society that is very difficult for us at time. This is the first book of hers I have read, but I am now a fan of her work. I found this book encouraging and gave me insight on how to handle the curve balls a sexist society throws as woman.

Almost the single best feminism book for young women!
I loved this book. I ordered it on my Kindle and I ended up reading through it very quickly. It uses informal, down-to-earth language, so that makes it perfect for formatting feminist concepts for someone who's never taken a women's studies class. Valenti is a terrific writer, able to connect to everyone's personal experiences regarding stereotypes, double standards, sex, romance, and politics. I think this book is perfect for young women (or anyone, really) who might not understand what feminism stands for or why it's important. The book was devilishly funny and the author impressively debunks all these pseudo-scientific studies suggesting that patriarchy is actually good for women. I thought that she could have gone more in-depth on some issues, but the way she wrote this book makes for fast, light, entertaining reading and I think that her ability to make feminism fun (yes, I said fun!) is what makes this book a gem among feminist literature. Because seriously, I might find it hard to explain to my boyfriend or a young person who is not a feminist the main arguments and issues brought up by more serious works such as The Beauty Myth and The Feminine Mystique. But tell them Valenti's pubic hair joke (it's in the chapter about the ridiculous but prevalent myth that gals aren't funny), and I could imagine their ears perking up, actually engaged and interested in the conversation. That's what that book does that I think is important, engages people, not in a too weighty or intellectual discussion, but in a simple conversation that might actually lead somewhere.

Great Book for Budding Feminists
After reading this book, I become more away of the many problems that women face in their day to day life. Society is ugly and confusing. Woman try to fit into a mold that is simply unattainable. You cannot be perfect in the eyes of society. Sexism is definitely not dead, and it might live forever if we do not become aware of it.

A nice intro to feminism
Valenti does an excellent job of highlighting many of the double-standards and ingrained sexism that exist in our society. The book is very much feminism light, so is ideal for young women and / or those new to the feminist literature.

A fun and enlightening read. You have probably noticed all 50 of these double standards in you day to day life, but this book organizes those thoughts into a fun read. Valenti poses each point with good arguments and solid examples. She is also a funny writer making this a humorous as well as enlightening read.

Excellent book
Valenti is a great writer, very passionate and straight to the point. These double standards are supported with evidence and are sadly still prevalent in our society today. A great awareness tool for any young woman!
