What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

Great idea ruined by . . . the actual movie.
Despite its poor performance in the box office, I had been looking forward to this film for months because the idea was so interesting. But stunted plot points and a jumpy timeline combined to remove virtually all chances for character development or audience empathy. It felt like a good 2 hr. movie that some crappy editor decided to chop down to 90 mins. by removing all subtlety and build up.Such helpful cinematic features are replaced by long-winded and awkward discussions of masturbation and disgusting, over-the-top acts of violence that seem to come out of nowhere. For a movie that couldn't spend a few extra minutes giving its audience some background context or characters to care about, it sure didn't mind lingering on useless and disturbing gore. This film could have (easily) been great. If the screenwriters were not up to the task, they could have at least settled for mildly thought provoking. Instead they used a fascinating premise as a mere springboard for a slasher film.

Almost like a 5th grader wrote it...
Pros: Great potential...what if young Super..type boy wasn't kind and gentle? Great potential. That is about it for the Pros.Cons: Horrible script. Almost no character background development. It just seems like gratuitous horror scenes were added for cheap thrills or by someone who thought that blood, guts, teeth and other bloody carnage would make viewers forget how horrible the screen writing was. This could have been a great movie, instead I give it a solid F. You can not believe me and spend $14.99 on it, but be prepared to be not surprised. Best find a friend who has this movie already and just waste 90 minutes of your life. You have been warned.

Missed opportunity
Just want to start off by saying that I love the overall concept of this movie, unfortunately, this a profoundly terrible version of the said concept and I'm not over exaggerating. Writing, dialogue, acting, directing. There was nothing that redeemed its existence. I hated nearly every decision the filmmakers made to tell this story. I'm actually a bit angry about it, in fact. I'm angry because this concept had so much potential to be really great, but sucks that it landed in the hands of terrible writers and filmmakers. I'd give it zero stars if i could. One star is too many.

Really lame attempt at horror, zero superhero elements
This film was marketed as "What if Superman was a rotten kid?"The film that we got, however, is a lame attempt at a slasher film akin to 2009's Orphan. The filmmakers made zero attempt to flesh out the psychology of a kid discovering his superpowers, and instead just made a movie about a psychotic kid who murders some locals and his oblivious parents refuse to acknowledge that their child who fell from space could possibly be any different from any other child.

What an Excellent Horror Movie
A lot of the reviews mention the fact that the origin story is basically Superman's, but flipped on its head, which is true. It even takes place in Kansas. It doesn't matter. This is a relentless, unforgiving movie, and a refreshing addition to the horror genre.About time. One of the first blind movie purchases I've made in a while that was satisfying. I wish it had a longer run time.

Superman Origin Story in Reverse Fizzles Out in Second Half
Warning: There are a few major spoilers in this review.I went to see Brightburn this weekend, intrigued by the previews. It opens when a childless couple in Kansas (sounds familiar) see a UFO crash on their farm (also sounds familiar) and inside they find an infant boy (still familiar). They hide the spacecraft under a trap door in their barn (more familiarity) and adopt the child (endlessly familiar). It’s the Superman origin story to a letter, but that’s where the similarities end.Fast forward to the boys twelfth birthday. He is beginning to be a real problem, demanding all sorts of unreasonable things and even resorting to violence when crossed, like breaking a female classmate’s hand. Things begin to get very nasty, and his parents suspect that he is more different from them than they initially realized. Before long, the whole thing breaks down and they learn that they made a major mistake by keeping him as their own. This film had lots going for it in the first hour, if you like suspense, terror and especially gore. The gory scenes were about as horrifying as you could expect, and some of the bloodier scenes were chilling indeed. But the second half of the film took a much darker turn than I expected, and the ending was marred by several plot holes that could not be overcome. The final scene was far less than satisfactory in my view, and I left the theatre unsatisfied. I have several friends who were looking forward to this movie, and I hope for their sake that they like it better than I.If you like gore in the extreme (think Hostel), blood and violence, you may enjoy it. But if you’re looking for the first “evil superhero” as the previews promise, you may be in for a letdown. Cast is good, special effects are so-so.I have ordered the Blu-Ray, but I pretty much get everything that comes out in the sci-fi / superhero / fantasy category, good bad or indifferent. I give it three stars.

Awesome movie
For those of you who read DC comics this is basically the story of evil parallel universe Superman, Ultraman from Earth 3.It's a really good look at what would happen if Superman believed he was superior to humanity. It's refreshing to see this played out in movie form.

I want a sequel.
I saw one reviewer who i don't think quite got this movie. Here you go. This is not supposed to be Superman but maybe an alternate time line where the alien in the rocket is not very nice at all. You are not supposed to take it as a Superman movie, it is not. Now the actors...small cast but a GREAT cast. The parents are terrific and the stand out is definitely the young man playing Brandon, not sure of who he is, but he is outstanding and the not so nice alien kid. He has the nuances down pat. I love the story and I love everything about it. Beg recommendations, not for the kids though.
