Stranded .com Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on SinatraΒs classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz

An intimate journey of rhythm & blues with Van the Man
For starters, did you know this whole CD is filled with cuts chosen by Van himself. One track has his daughter singing on background vocals. Several tracks have Van singing with legendary blues men, like BB King, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, Booby "Blue" Bland. Not to mention his duets with Tom Jones, The Chieftans, Carl Perkins, etc. This is a boogie down album at times when Van get's in the groove your head won't want to stop moving to the beat and it is curl up on the sofa soothing at times, with that honey dripping mellow intimacy which Van's voice can evoke at the drop of a hat. Probably my favorite cut is one I had never heard before, but had been recorded on a previous album, entitled "Stranded". Such a fluid gentle winding river of a tune that I could listen to on repeat for hours.Listen to his take on the Frank Sinatra standard, "That's Life", or his reinventing the phrasing for his former tune with his former group, Them, when he penned and sang, G-L-O-R-I-A, I"ll say it every day, Gloria", only this time with blues great, John Lee Hooker. For Van fans, this one will be getting many repeat plays.

Fantastic
I had heard this album when it first came out and thought I had purchased it digitally. When I wanted to hear Blue & Green again I couldn't find the music any where so I purchased this CD. It arrived safely and well packaged and the music on this CD is truly AMAZING!

Continuing writers block
Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

Too Long In Exile
I can not say enough good things about this 2 CD set. Long after the music has stopped the songs keep running though my head. What I most like about it is that the songs on it were chosen by Van Morrison which to me makes it more special and less just commercial successes. Also, the list of people who accompany him is pretty mind blowing. I'd forgotten just how much I liked the sax playing of Candy Dulfur. Anyway folks, I love this set and I think you will too. Van has indeed been "too long in exile..."

Great as is a VM's CD's
Very nice VM CD. Unlike some other artists I think Morrison has a say so in his recording quality. His stuff is always rich and vibrant. I seems a lot of bands are letting people record or re-master their music w/o making sure the sound quality is equal to the work they put into making their music. It is going to be their legacy so I don't understand the disconnect.VM is always top shelf and a delight.

Rock the gypsy in your soul
An amazing compilation of Van Morrison's enchanting and haunting melodies. Although I am not a big jazz or blues fan, he has managed to put those two elements together in a way that is a lyrical treat. The melodies are addictive and very catchy. As he has matured, his renditions of some of his earlier works are performed now with more conviction, passion, and confidence than ever before. Van is an extremely talented musician and lyricist that successfully impacts music for the ages. I could listen to Van Morrison 24/7.

Glad To Have Found This Long-Lost CD!
I've looked everywhere for this album since my original CD got lost whilst I was on holiday and despaired that I would not be able to find another copy. I'm so glad I found it and now it has pride of place on my new MP3. Van Morrison is a masterful, versatile musician and I've had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert on a number of occasions. When he collaborates with musical greats right across the musical spectrum in the studio or live, it's magic. I'm looking for Volumes I and II.

Misleading But Entertaining
Yes, the title is a misnomer but the double CD is an entertaining bargain. Good for slotting into the car player.
