Q: what size drill bit should i use?

You need to use a 7/16" bit, which usually isn't included in a basic drill bit set but can be bought at any hardware store. 1/2" bit is too big (which would create a loose fit) and 3/8" is too small.

Q: What is the maximum weight these brtackets will hold - also if i put them into a stud does this change?

They are sturdy and will hold quite a bit. If into studs you can put a lot on them. I made floating book shelf’s with them and have multiple books on the shelf. My 3year old used them as a ladder to climb the wall and they stayed in place.

Q: What bracket would work for 3/4” shelf?

I believe this size would be great. Not too long, but the perfect width for holding a sturdy piece of wood or shelving.

Q: I used 1/2” bit and to get the rod into wood I would have to pound it it. Should I have to pound it in?

No. Wrong sized bit. It should be a firm fit but you should not have to pound.
