Loud Quiet Loud - A Film About the Pixies

A real inside look at the Pixies
I bought Loud Quiet Loud with high hopes, and was not disappointed. I was hoping to hear good music and see inside the lives of the band members and I feel that is exactly what I got from Loud Quiet Loud. As a matter of fact it was almost uncomfortable how we saw into their private feelings, worries and doubts. This film really lets you see them as people not just vastly talented musicians who must live a fairy tale life like people imagine celebrities. In this picture you see Dave Lovering go through the loss of his father, and his unraveling. Joey Santiago as he has to be away from his wife while she is expecting and struggle to score a film while on tour. You feel the concern for whether Kim Deal will be able to maintain her sobriety in the rock and roll atmosphere and show pressure. Last but not least you see Charles Thompson(black francis)and his frustration wanting to do more. To regain the success of the early pixies with new material, and the fact all his solo projects are overshadowed by the Pixies. Even if you are not a pixies fan you will enjoy this film for it's humanity, and the excellent picture and sound quality.

This Monkey's Gone To Heaven!
As an owner of all previous Pixies DVD's/albums and a fan of the band since 1985, it pleases me greatly to report that this here is my favorite Pixies DVD ever!Expertly intertwining revealing, off-stage footage with cacophonous concert scenes, the title refers to both the changing dynamics within a typical Pixies song as well as the shift from raucous rocknroll to silent, somber non-communication when the band members step off the stage. We see drummer Dave Lovering teeter on sanity's edge following the death of his father, Kim Deal and her twin sister Kelly grapple with newfound sobriety (as well as record new Breeders songs on a 4-track!), Joey Santiago struggle with separation from his young family, and Frank Black try to come to terms with the band that will always be his legacy. From the uncertain rehearsals to the triumphant tour, we get intimate access to the band in a way I personally never dreamed I'd have. Plus we are treated to a superb, shimmering score (during the quieter moments) from Daniel Lanois (another of my favorites), as well as an oddly touching encounter with a young, female superfan that represents a microcosm of how much this band can mean to so many.

Pixies reunion doc
Appreciate the Pixies. And I was wondering if after all this time we could please let us drop "alternative" when talking about the music? It's just great rock 'n' roll. I don't even know what alternative means. Maybe alternative to sucking. It doesn't even make remote sense now. Alternative to metal hair bands of the 80s? So many newer bands owe a debt to the Pixies. They were a great band and proved they can still rock after many years apart. Their reunion tour is captured well here. You see sorta warts and all I guess. But they leave some mystery as to what makes the Pixies one of rock's most important bands of the last 30 years. Well I'd put 'em up there as truly one the all time best bands. Lots of great live footage and backstage scenes. Must see for fans.

For New Fans and Old Fans!
I've always loved the Pixies but hadn't really gotten into the whole story of the break-up and reunion. Great to hear the music and get some of the story from the band members themselves. Nicely done!

Pixies - True Punks
This is a beautiful film which exposes the members of the Pixies as refreshingly normal humans. They reunited for a massive tour after being apart for many years. The amount of understated concern and affection they have for each other came through clearly and explained the chemestry that make them one of the most unique and wonderful bands to come down the pike. Anyone can put on leather, get a Mowhawk, and declare himself a punk. However, it takes a real punk to perform at middle age and overweight and not only pull it off but blow the doors off the barn! I gained new respect for ALL the band members not only as musicians but also as human beings. Long live the Pixies!

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
If you love Pixies this is certainly a must see. It is not overtly revealing, I mean go figure that they have their weirdnesses. But the pure explosive chemistry of them onstage is incredibly miracluous. This is made even more so by the fact that there is on painful scene where they just don"t talk to each other."We don"t talk much to each other. I mean, we like each other. We just aren"t those kind of people".There is some fragility reflected...Kim Deal,in recovery, needs support from her sister. David Lovering comes across like an on the edge whack job. But there is humanity too. Black Francis(Charles Thompson) actually comes across as a fairly ingratiating person at times. Joey Santiago seems like the rock that holds them all down. And essentially, in the end, it is the music that galvanizes this piece....as well it should be. Some people hate Pixies(my wife for one) but there is no denying their impact, surrealistic, dynamic, innovative, melodic and nuerotic.I was so excited to see this, and I am glad I did.

The Pixies are one of my favourite bands and I did see them on this 2004 ...
The Pixies are one of my favourite bands and I did see them on this 2004 reunion tour which was a blessing as I thought I'd missed the opportunity. They are amazing live and this comes across well in the doc.At first I found this a frustrating watch as you want to get to know the band and understand why they split but by the end you feel like you've been left hanging. They admit they don't talk to each other much but don't particularly see this as a problem though others do. Is it really not a problem or are they frightened of addressing it and prefer to sweep it under the carpet to avoid awkwardness and difficult conversations. Charles does say they like each other when asked but it's not very convincing. Also, apart from the rush of the early shows, its hard to tell if they're enjoying the tour.Kim comes across as quite sad which maybe she is. She looks bemused when a fan showers her with praise as she clearly doesn't see any reality in it. Kim has always been characterised as 'cool as f***' and I expect that's been a problem for her. This was also a problem for Charles according to Joey as he alludes to Charles being jealous of her popularity and star status.David was a lot more troubled than I imagined, struggling with addictions you never quite see and the death of his father. Joey is quiet and seemed stuck in the middle of it all, looking unhappy most of the time. This was not as I imagined them to be but on reflection my disappointment was more about me and my expectations. As fans we like to think that all our favourite bands are great mates who love what they do each night but the reality is that for the majority of bands who're still going into middle age it does become more of a job and the buzz and magic went a while ago. Why would they enjoy it if they're missing their families on the road and they're spending long periods travelling. Loneliness and boredom are the enemies of happiness. It's important to point out that I've seen them 3 times since they reformed and they blew me away each time. The Pixies are pretty ordinary people when they're not on stage and why shouldn't they be? Now I do feel I got to know them a bit even if it didn't match my preconceptions but ultimately I feel this doc is left wanting.

Hey! Fascinating Documentary...
I found this documentary totally fascinating and very insightful. I love the Pixies music and was lucky enough to see them in 2004 (T In The Park). However, I knew very little about the band themselves, their back story or who they are as people. Okay, so this dvd doesn't go into their whole history and it doesn't give any kind of 'analysis' of their music but it does give us an insight into life on the road, the dynamics of the band and the contrast between working musician and 'normal life'.I would reccommend this dvd to any Pixie fan, great music, funny at times and very watchable. It has made me want to know more about them and buy more Pixies stuff!! 10 out of 10

Maybe worth 3.5 stars....
Whilst this will be worth watching for die-hard Pixies fans like myself, in truth this is not a great musical documentary... or rockumentary if you will. Aside from Joe Santiago, none of the band come across as really likeable nor do we really get to grips with the problems which split them up in the first place. Instead we get series of little short interludes filmed on the road spliced up with concert footage, whilst interesting enough (just about) there somehow lacks the cohesive narrative and drama which made Mettalicas "Some Kind of Monster" both compelling and unintentionally funny. I gather the Pixies were less than 100% happy with the end results, and speaking as a fan since the late 80's so was I.... In reality it turns out that not a great deal happens on the road of a middle-aged rock band who reform largely for financial rather than creative reasons, so perhaps we shouldnt be surprised. Still, for those who cant get enough its worth the money - even if the documentary crew could have done a little better.
