Tilt - Season One [DVD]

Fantastic Fiction
I've been playing poker since I was a kid in a caddyshack in 1993. I've been an avid fan of excellent writing and film shortly thereafter. This is an excellent combination of the two. Koppleman and Levine revive the spirit of Rounders in Tilt, more or less a near extension of the spirit of the film. It's greatly appreciated by this viewer how the hands aren't over the top, more people win with straights and boats than the over-dramatized and rarely dealt four of a kind or the hallowed royal straight flush. The characters are varied, and have strong personal development without the necessity of going too far or too heavily into the background except when it's necessary as a device to tell the story. The pace of the story is excellent with solid forward momentum, along with creative cinematography that enhances rather than over-does; a smashing choice of casting effective actors who aren't huge ego-maniacal celebrities, and most appreciated were some of the unique poker personalities who make guest appearances throughout the episodes. Some of Madsen's performances were a bit thin, but overall this is an excellent series which should have been carried on to another season, possibly with different characters, and even (dare I say it) another choice of game.

Masterpiece
Simply put, one of television's crowning achievements of this or any era. Madsen's acting is remnant of Marlon Brando in The Godfather. The character of Nickel is indisputably one of the most multileveled and perplexing in the history of drama, displaying Chris Bauer's massive and unfaltering acting prowess.Tilt's dialogue is so natural that one often forgets that he is watching a piece of dramatic fiction, and not a documentary. The writing is top notch. Such a blend of drama, action, comedy, and nickel has never before been seen on the screen, and it brought a tear to the collective eye of millions of viewers every week.My only regret is that Tilt was released as a weekly series, instead of as an epic film trilogy as originally intended. If not for the hollywood fatcats' politcal agendas, Tilt could have swept the Academy Awards like an unforgiving flood, and been seen as the greatest film trilogy of all time.

Look out
I saw this one when it originally aired on ESPN, and thought it was great then. Been watching for a copy ever since, and when I finally got it in the mail, I put on a pot of coffee and watched the entire series nonstop. 'Rounders' without the gratuitous swearing, and the final table footage from the '98 series is a bonus. It was available at some local video stores, but way overpriced (60.00+).

Garbage.
The plot is stupid, the acting is bad, and the poker play is awful. Painful experience to sit through the whole series. Just watch Rounders.

Love It
I remember catching a couple episodes of this show when it was on ESPN when I was in high school. Finding it here on Amazon.com was great. I spent a whole Saturday watching the entire series and I loved it. It was just as good as I remember. The storyline was great, the acting was good/great (I feel that's personal preference). I thought it was an excellent show.

Love this series!!
I really wish ESPN or someone else would bring this series back! Great series about poker just as Hold Em was getting extremely popular.

Of course it's 5 star. I know someone it.
it's actually a pretty entertaining series as long as you like poker. Many of the playing scenes were consulted by someone I know who's a dealer and tournament organizer so it's as genuine as anything made for movie or tv can be.
