Simple but effective
This is a great simple device for starting a fire. It's small and can easily fit in a packet or back pack.

Buyer Beware
I previously reviewed this product saying it was a bait-and-switch because the ferro rod is quite small and glued into the fake BIG rod you see. However, I discovered that the bigger rod is supposed to be a magnesium rod for scraping shavings. OK ... that's true. It's a "magnesium rod" for scraping shavings, after which you use the ferro rod glued insert to spark it. Effectively, this is the same idea as a Doan Magnesium bar issued to the military since the 70s ... (STILL THE BEST OPTION AT EIGHT BUCKS.)I am NOT increasing my star rating after field testing this item. It scrapes into shavings, it sparks, but the result is ridiculously lacking compared to a USA-made Doan magnesium bar. It takes a spark, but does not fire up into flame.I thought this product was a basic ferro rod ... my bad. However, if you want real bang for your buck you can get FIVE 3.15" x 5/16" plain rods, delivered, for under ten bucks, no magensium. Again, two bucks per rod, but FAR larger. Fashion a grip of wood, or duct tape, or forget the grip altogether. Then use your knife spine to strike a spark or make a striker from a hack saw blade. You can get this great deal here: Flint Rod Fire Starter lighter Ferrocerium Stone Magnesium Survival Under the size option, choose pack of 5.

I'd recommend one off those
Must of the rod is "magnesium" which is to say, a soft metal, but not really ignitable in shaving form. Only a very thin rod (maybe 1.5mm) stuck to the larger rod is striking material. At least that part works well and gives decent sparks, I doubt it will last very long though. I've got others with thicker Ferro rods that don't cost much more, I'd recommend one off those.
