A Box of Treats: Five Little Picture Books about Lilly and Her Friends: A Christmas Holiday Book Set for Kids

I bought these for my classroom because my students love Kevin Henkes. These are a nice addition and allow me to give them a quick treat by throwing in an additional story with characters they know and love. I am only giving this four stars because as a teacher, it bothers me that the titles aren't on the cover of each book. I am still teaching my students concepts of print and to look at the title on the cover, so this is confusing for them. I also like to display our books when we do an author study, and it's unclear which book is which unless you are looking at the spine or back (which is not always possible when displaying books). This may seem nit picky but it does matter in the classroom.

Wonderful short stories! I recommend also buying the book collection with this cast of characters. These two products are part of my child’s book stash. She loves Lily and Sheila. Gotta build up my 2 yo so she grows up to be strong and brave!

As mentioned in other reviews; this set of books is nicely smallish (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), and beautifully drawn, and the 5 stories are lovely. What no one has yet bothered to mention is the answer to "What do you get?" in this smallish, prettily drawn and nicely written set?You get 5 small, hard cover books in a nice, slick board box;Lilly's Chocolate Heart, Owen's Marshmellow Chick, Wemberly's Ice-Cream Star, Julius's Candy Corn and Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick.Each short story involves a 'treat'; an Easter Marshmellow Chick, some Halloween Candy Corn, a Forth of July ice cream, etc, that barely mention the holiday to which they owe their existance. For example, although Owen does get an "Easter basket", there is no mention of Christmas in Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick and no mention of why a red, white and blue star-shaped ice-cream would be Wemberly's special treat "on a hot day".All of which is fine with me, I thoroughly enjoy reading these with my 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old kids, even our 18 month old seems to enjoy these stories, but I feel if we were not a Christmas-and-Easter-celebrating household, this set would have been a bit of a bummer. So, consider yourself warned. :)

I am a First Grade Bilingual teacher and I really enjoyed reading the five short stories. I think these will be great conversation starters for my students to practice their English. I plan to use these little books for my ESL Guided Reading lessons. I only bought one box but plan to buy 4 more for my classroom. Thank you Kevin Henkes for creating these wonderful books!

I love these books and this author. He is my absolute favorite kids book author and I have every one of his books. This is my second set of these board books because I gifted my others away. My granddaughter could “ read” them to herself when she was 2 because she’d heard them so often.

I liked these books because they are small and simple for a small child. We read them to our daughter and she likes to look at the pictures. One of the books pages were not cut correctly so that was my only negative for these!

My 4 year old loves Kevin Henkes, and she comes back to this set time and time again. She loves to read the simple stories to herself and interact with the characters. For example, she likes to pretend to eat Owen's Easter candy and laughs as she tells him his marshmallow chick will be sticky if he leaves it out overnight! A cute box set, especially for little Henkes fans.

These books are adorable as are all of Kevin Hencks books. I purchased these well ahead of my granddaughters birthday and unfortunately did not look through them carefully when they arrived. When I went to wrap them (past the return date) I discovered that Wembley’s Ice Cream Star had no pages in it! It was just the cover. It doesn’t even look like there were ever pages inside it. Very disappointed. If you order these please check each book when they arrive!

Very cute short stories, both of my girls loved these when they were young and still like to read them at 6 & 8 years old.
