I bought a medium for my petite 8yo daughter. It was HUGE on her. I'm guessing it might fit when she is 10 or 11. I can only assume that the large is even larger.

It’s a way to differentiate when brands market for different ages (babies, toddlers/young girls, older girls, juniors, and adults). The term “big girls” also helps narrow down the search for relevant products for the sizes you’re looking for.
