G**Y
I really thought that I wanted a wired setup; however I had to change to wireless because it just worked better.
The 8740 officejet is most assuredly the mother of all inkjet printers. Prior to this I owned an officejet pro 8600 all in one ( the predecessor). It will handle virtually any type of media except for extra wide stock. This is an advantage as other manufacturers can not accommodate programs such as Microsoft Publisher in office Professional in Office 2016. Now here is the downside. The installation service technician under the flag of Amazon in home services stumbled as I believe her would because most of the technicians in the printer department encountered difficulties until the install was complete. If you are using it in your boss's office you probably won't care but if you are fairly knowledgeable regarding computers and printers you want this to work. This printer is a workhorse and I have no regrets. I was able to calculate how much ink I would use if I bought the XL cartridges and it is pretty much a wash. Thus, I decline having the ink charges going on my credit card with instant ink because if I get sick It will just be an extra surprise for my wife. Be good to yourself--this printer can produce the finest finished product The following things are much better on this prnter than its predecessor the officejet 8600 pro:the FAXING CAPABILITIES ARE NOTHING SHORT OF REMARKABLE--THE PRINTER CAN DELIVER AN INCOMING FAX PAPERLESS IF ONE ELECTS TO A FOLDER PERHAPS ON THE DESKTOP; THE OUTGOING FAX CAPABILITES ARE MARKEDLY IPROVED. THERE STILL REMAINS ONE SMALL PROBLEM AND THAT WOULD BE WITH COMPATIBILITY WITH MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 2016---ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ENVELOPES WHICH IS A2 AND MEASURES 5.75" WIDE AND 4.375 HIGH ( IT IS FOR QUARTER FOLDGREETING CARDS AND INVITATIONS) IS SIZED NCORRECTLY AND IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF MICROSOFT-AND I PLACED IT IN THE PRINTER AS INSTRUCTED IN THE HO OWNER MANUAL FACE DOWN AND FLAP UP WITH THE FLAP ON THE LEFT SIDE AND THE ADDRESS PRINTED UPSIDE DOWN--AFTERWARDS I SET IT UP FOR VITUAL PRINTING MICROSOFT XL AND THEN PDF AND IT PRINTED PERFECTLY--I AM SMART ENOUGH TO WORK AROUND IT BUT NOT HAPPY WITH FUSSING AROUND

Complete Garbage
The media could not be loaded. *** Update: Jan 2020 **So it's been about over a year of owning this printer and let me tell you, it's a complete nightmare, and that's using the overpriced OEM HP cartridges. Constant failures, poor print quality, hardware issues, firmware issues...I couldn't make this stuff up! Assuming we had a defective unit we replaced it with another one but the issues kept occurring. In fact we've experienced more problems with this printer than all of our other printers combined. Attached to this review are images and videos showing some of the failures and error messages. We will never buy another HP product again, guaranteed! :(*** Original Review: Sept 2018 ***Overall, a decent home office printer for light to moderate use. New printer and I haven't purchased ink so I can't comment on that experience yet. I did NOT opt into the HP Instant Ink program as it's a waste of money in my opinion, your mileage may vary.=== PROS ===* VERY fast printer, faster than my old laser color for initial page print* Lots of connectivity options; web-based, Android and iPhone printing, NFC, Wifi, ethernet, email printing, etc* Some small business/SOHO features; scan to network drive, encrypted local document storage, etc* Multiple paper trays BUT see CON listed below* Plenty of 3rd party ink options that look promising* HP Instant Ink program is optional (else I wouldn't have purchased)* Single-pass duplex scanning works like a dream=== CONS ===* It's an inkjet, so lighter-weight paper will wrinkle when printing graphics of any size* Printing large volumes might get expensive versus a laser printer* HP Instant Ink is more expensive vs buying ink directly (at least in my case, your mileage may vary)* No single-sheet feed option, so changing print media is a hassle (e.g. printing a single envelope)* Limited capacity for printing multiple envelopes or other special media* EPIC FAILURE for envelope print options versus the cheaper "lower model" OfficeJet Pro 8720So my main complaint is highly specific to me, but here it is. I tried the OfficeJet Pro 8720 first but it kept jamming all of my duplex scan. However it did print my 6 3/4" envelopes without any problem or fuss. So I upgraded to the OfficeJet Pro 8740 because of the single-pass duplex. Problem solved. Unfortunately the 8740 is missing multiple envelope size options per the image attached to this review. So as wonderful as the printer is I can't use it to print envelopes which is one of my primary use cases for this product. I upgraded the printer to the latest available firmware from HP yet the printer refuses to support 6 3/4" (and other size) envelopes. This is highly frustrating given that the less expensive "lower model" 8720 has no problem supporting these sizes. It's a mystery. If you don't need/want to print envelopes of this size or at all then consider this a 4.5-star review instead of the 3-star rating I gave it.
