A Great Seafaring Adventure movie
This movie was released in 1959. So don't expect Blu-ray quality. But for picture and sound it's great as a regular DVD. Way better than VHS. To make things even better, it's in widescreen CinemaScope and Metrocolor. First of all I must point out that I am a nautical and seafaring movie freak. It's a very hard to find this DVD. But oh is it worth it if you are a fan of adventure and even court room dramas and can find it to purchase. No CGI, no Transformers vs Battleships or superhero crap and stuff they make today. This is the real deal. It makes B movies I liked in this genre like Ghost Ship or Lost Voyage, well it puts them to shame. Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Richard Harris and others make a fine flick together. Oh and for you ladies there is a female in the movie. The very beautiful and very talented Virginia McKenna...that's right from the classic movie "Born Free" about Elsa the lioness. You cannot go wrong with this one...if you can find this sunken gem of a treasure to own.

Who sank the Mary Deare? The owners out for insurance money? The secret cargo that had to be sunk?
This is an epic sea story that has all the intrigue, and more, that you might want. Gary Cooper and a young Charlton Heston star in a film that's part seafaring adventure, part mystery, and part courtroom drama. I saw it in 1959 when it came out, loved it, and bought it on DVD. My dad was a sailor and I felt 'right at home' watching this DVD.

Subtitles, hooray!
This movie seemed interesting to me and I like both Charlton Heston and Gary Cooper so I gave it a shot. However, I thought it was just ok. I was pleasantly surprised by the special effects in the ocean! That looked very good and real. Unfortunately, I found the story kind of boring though. I was very surprised to find that there were subtitles so that was good and helped me to hear the dialogue.

DVD is fine but film is a bit slow moving and boring
DVD is fine. Movie itself is kind of slow moving and boring. I remembered as being better.

Was a really great movie with Gary Cooper
I purchased this movie as I saw it when it first come out way back in the late 1950's. Gary Cooper stared in it and I always remebered the wonderful part he played it in. Now I want to watch it again and have it in my classic library.

Deep Sea Mystery with Clever Plot Twists
This is an exciting film, based on a bestselling novel by Hammond Innes, with two fine lead actors. What makes it so appealing is that initially Gary Cooper appears to be the villain and plays it to the hilt because he is hiding a dreadful secret. It further appears that big businessman Peter Illing and henchman Richard Harris are the good guys. Gradually the plot switches round and the viewer comes to realize that this is far from the truth. The special effects are very good for their time and the script, acting and direction are top notch. Gary Cooper in the early scenes is a truly frightening figure. This is one of those films which can be watched several times and one notices some aspect of the plot which one has not noticed before. The subtitles can be disposed of and do not detract from the enjoyment.
