This book brought me to tears as a Pagan. It’s important that we study history so that we can learn from it, which is exactly what the author says at the beginning.I love that she is a Christian who not only took the time to study religious history, but write an amazing book about it.I found this book to be incredibly informative, easy to follow, and very well written!I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the dark history of how Christianity came to be the most popular religion in the world.

This book is very nicely written and contains tons of historical, religious and other facts. As a former student of religious sciences I admit that I was gobsmacked by the sheer amount of names, context etc.I recommend it to everybody who's eager to learn about early christianity, fanatism, church history etc.The author really describes a darkening age from the heights of the Greek philosophers and polytheist religions to the dark and often enough disgusting depths of religious fanaticism. Some of what happened back then in the olden days seems sadly familiar, all to familiar. Early Christians weren't better than the IS or the Taliban of today, sometimes even worse. The only difference was their lack of modern weaponry.After reading this book you will see all the televangelists, the manic street preachers and even the pastor from the church round the corner with different eyes.Trigger warning: This book is nothing for people with a weak stomach. It contains a lot of atrocities, committed by the "religion of love".

Es un libro muy facil de digerir, que te atrapa inmediatamente. La escritora nos lleva al pasado muy poco contado o discutido de los primeros años del Cristianismo como religión oficial del imperio, y la destrucción que detuvo la ciencia y avances occidentales. Vale la pena.En cuanto al libro físico, me llego un poco maltratado en los bordes, pero la integridad del libro esta bien.

ちょっと前から気になっていた作品です。テーマは「古典世界のキリスト教による破壊」です。高校の世界史の授業で誰もが紀元前のギリシアの哲学者たちの話を教わると思います。プラトン、アリストテレスそしてアレキサンダー大王の話です。そしてその後はローマ帝国。もちろんヘレニズム文明の話もその間に挿話のように含まれてはきます。でもヘレニズム文明はその折衷的な性格に軽く言及されるだけで、ここには思想上の大きな断絶というかcleavageが潜んでいることにはなかなか気が付きません。教科書では、コンスタンティヌス1世によるキリスト教の公認は取り扱われていても、その持つ意味合いが深く取り上げられることはなかったような記憶があります。そうそこには多神教から一神教への移行が存在するのです。多神教から一神教への移行というのはいうまでもなく大変な転換です。その大きな変動は決して平和的なものではなく、本書では「古典世界のキリスト教による破壊」と名づけられ、語られていきます。おそらくISによる様々な遺跡の破壊が著者にこの作品を書かせたのでしょう。つまり一神教というドグマのもとでは必然的に他者への寛容は背後に退き、自己陶酔と改宗の強制ともいうべきドグマが前面に出てくるのです。本書で扱われている時代はAD385からAD532の時代です。もっともキリスト教はその前から存在するので、扱われる時代にはその前後も含まれていきます。そして語られる内容は必ずしも歴史の時間を直線的にたどるというスタイルではなく、時間は前後し、登場する場所もローマ帝国の勢力範囲を反映してローマ、アレキサンドリアそして現シリアの忘れさられてしまった都市と多岐にわたります。著者はこの時代に存在した様々な哲学者の作品と聖書の文言を解読していきます。これは困難な作業です。これらの哲学者の多様な作品は現在まで断片的な形でしか残存していないのです。様々な今は忘れ去られた哲学者たちの思想やキリスト教に対する違和感が呈示されていきます。著者はそこに明と暗を対応させていきます。明がキリスト教に毒されていない思想家や文学者たちの豊潤な哲学や思想であり、暗は一神教の熱情に侵されたキリスト教、特にその過激派というわけです。後者は破壊への衝動に促されています。破壊は物理的な意味では、古典世界の建築物や彫刻の破壊に代表されていきます。首が倒され、腕が傷つけられていくというわけです。著者は考古学が明らかにした破壊の様々な痕跡とその背景をたどっていきます。破壊は物理的なものだけにとどまることはありません。懐疑や異論の存在を原理的に認めることのないキリスト教は内面への統制を目的として、焚書にまで進み、結果としてキリスト教の前の時代の知的伝統（哲学や文学）をpaganismとして侮蔑し、その根絶にまで突き進むというわけです。キリスト教の「公認」により、古代ギリシアにつながる知的伝統は一度断絶されてしまったというのが著者の解釈であり、それがAD532のアテネのacademyの閉鎖によって象徴されているのです。そして「暗黒」ともいうべき中世への道へとつながったというわけです。歴史はいうまでもなく勝者の語るストーリーです。それに対して、著者は残された断片（書物や建造物）からこの絶滅された敗者の「古典世界」をその人間的な魅力と豊潤さの観点から蘇らせようとしています。ただなぜこれほどまでに退行したキリスト教がこれ程までの興隆を短い間に達成したのかについてはあまり深い言及はされません。著者の語りのスタイルはかなりこったもので、使われている英語や用語も、扱われているテーマのせいかそれとも著者のスタイルなのかは私には判別できませんが、相当に凝ったものです。また聖書の知識がほぼ欠落している日本人にとっては踏み入れてはいけない領域なのでしょう。「こういう見方もある」、そこにとどめておくのが賢明かな。
