Q: Do you need a sheet over this? or can the baby just sleep on this?

Q: How breathable is this?

I found it to be very breathable. My granddaughter has used it a lot and I have had no issues with it and she sleeps great with it on her mattress. Hope this helps.

Q: does this make babies warmer, that typically run hot to begin with? Anyone have experience with this? We live in Texas, so our summers are very hot

My baby naturally produces heat and I find that this has warth but not so much that he's going to overheat cuz it does have cotton so it does feel cool to the touch the baby will definitely not overheat

Q: Can this be used as the only protector/sheet or do you have to put a fitted sheet over this?

You can do both actually. The top layer of this pack n play mattress protector is quite soft and hypoallergenic, so it's great to lay on. If you decide to have your little one sleep in the playard, get an extra cotton sheet on top, it will bring a cool comfort sleep experience.
