We have our bathroom back!
So I tried all manner of deodorizers, ionizers and air purifiers in conjunction with our self cleaning litter box, finally settling on keeping it in our bathroom with the fan left on. The results were predictable. Every time our furry friend walked out of the bathroom, it was best to wait a few minutes for the smell to clear out. Vacillating between dealing with a stinky house or an outdoor cat, I happened upon the whisker vent. Eureka. Since installing the whisker vent in our living room, our house is skink-free.Because the fan is virtually silent, I placed it in our living room near a window. Understandably my wife was skeptical but after a week of Dinkums doing his business, she's a believer too. You will be hard pressed to find any olfactory evidence of a cat in our house. I'm not terribly handy but found the setup to be straightforward. Not being the best shopper, I paid a few dollars more or I'd give it another star. Great product which performs as advertised.

Do not, I repeat, do not buy this piece of backyard DIY junk.
This product is NOT at all a professionally made product. This is basically a backyard, home DIY with hot glue and screws to jerry rigging a sawed off piece of PCV elbow, rubber hose, and styrofoam calling it "window" insert. This is a horrible piece of item. The product came damaged already in the box. The glue came off and the PVC elbow came off. There's no real securing of the piping to the box besides some hot-gun glue squirted around the cutout for the pipe.I will be attaching photos soon when I get it transferred over here to the PC.So basically you get is your typical $20-$30 kitty litter box and this guy drilled a hole in the back, DIY and PVC piped it and screwed 3 steel screws form the top to secure a fan box INSIDE the kitty litter box (attached to the lid of the box, of course). This explains why the unit is noisy when running because the cat's head is gonna be right next to the fanbox. I thought the company would have the smarts to build fans on the external or the other end of the hose so the noise is away from the box. Their design is just plain stupid. Believe me, of the hundreds of reviews I post, this is the only time I used the word "stupid" to describe this DIY cat box.The window insert portion, wow. Wow! A piece of styrofoam probably cut from a piece of trash, and a hole was drilled through it so the PVC pipe can pass through. I have no idea why anyone who actually (truly, actually) bought it would give this thing a 3 or 4 or even 5 stars. Unbelievable! In my opinion per my observation of the assembly, product glue/screwing, and foam, this is a $20-$30 kitty litter box with $20 of DIY good enough for that of a 12 year old.The shipping contained zero protective peanuts, airbags or anything. Obviously the horribly constructed jerry rig fell apart upon arrival. Shipper/Company was cheap enough to NOT include any protective stuffing for a shipping something that supposedly costs near $200? This further shows you how, wow, I am speechless.. how this product is and what this person/company is all about.By all means if you have Prime buy it and return it just to see for yourself what I mean by horrible.Do not, I repeat, do not buy this piece of backyard DIY junk.Oh, before I forget, this litter box is TOO SMALL for average sized cat! It's crammed and small. Can a cat sh-t in it? Of course. Will a cat want to use it? Not likely. So, another problem to add to the list of why this litter box is a zero-star if I could gave it a zero-star.

Best litter box system ever
The Whisker Vent (window venting version) is one of the best purchases I've ever made. My wife and I got our two cats five years ago. For the first three years we kept a well-maintained litter box in a back corner, and it was pretty terrible - even though we cleaned the litter box religiously, the smell would get so bad that even the cats wouldn't use it any more. We've now had the Whisker Vent for a year and half, and it has dramatically improved our quality of life. There is absolutely zero smell from the litter in our room. The dust from the litter (we use World's Best) is sucked right up through the fan. And, perhaps this is my imagination, but the inside seems to smell so much better that our cats take a lot more care cleaning up after themselves - leaving less litter tracked outside, less mess inside the litter box, etc.We purchased the complete Whisker Vent set (where the fan is bolted into the cover), so installation was a breeze. Basically we just had to cut the foam insert to the size of our window, wedge it under a window pane, and then plug in the unit. Our cats had zero problem with the box or the fan.The fan makes a quiet buzzing noise that is noticeable but a lot quieter than bathroom fans - it sounds similar to a desktop computer. At even a short distance the fan noise isn't noticeable at all. And we've left it running continuously for almost two years now and it's never broken or slowed down (or really changed at all).I don't really have anything bad to say about the Whisker Vent except for two extremely minor points. First, my cats LOVE scratching up the foam insert, even though it's pretty high up, so it's now torn up to hell and I've had to use a lot of duct tape to keep it together. That's probably an issue with my cats though. Second, because the fan unit is built into the cover, it's not possible to dunk the entire cover into a sink or bathtub to wash it, as I used to do. But it's easy enough to use a wet wipe or towel to scrub it down every once in a while; because a lot of the dust is sucked up through the fan, the cover actually doesn't get very dirty between cleanings. If it's not clear, we really love the Whisker Vent. I don't think we (or our cats) can possibly go back to an unventilated litter box after this.
