No Dive
Disappointed that the New Orleans setting for this light murder mystery couldn't save me from the struggle I experienced to finish. I just wasn't able to get into the characters or the story line. It's like skimming the surface with no dive sequence to plunge this reader into the depths of the journey. The story centers around a bakery in New Orleans. Thank you to the author for including a scrumptious recipe for beignets a New Orleans favorite. Yum.

That Old Black Magic had me in it's spell
Embarrassing to say this is the first book I bought on my Kindle and the first Piper Donovan book I am just now getting around to reading it and I am wondering why, why, why it took me so long. Not only are the characters and setting so captivating that I felt like I was back visiting New Orleans again. The storyline holds you and while I had narrowed down the killer to 3 suspects 2 which I could give good motives, the ending was a little bit of a surprise. Now I have to get the first and second books to read.

a good story
I enjoyed the story. It was a page turner, though many pages were turned and not read. In fact, a chapter or two were. The reason for this was the reason i gave only 4 stars, so much repetition. after reading about 3-4 chapters you would get a long paragraph re-telling something already told and told in the earlier chapters. it became annoying so i just skipped those pages.Regardless, i did truly enjoy the book and if you are willing to look over the minor things i do recommend the read.

I love Mary Jane Clark
I recently began reading the Piper Donovan/Wedding Cake Mysteries series and have loved every book. In each book from the series Piper is working in a different location. In That Old Black Magic she is in New Orleans. I have been to New Orleans several times and feel that the author gave a very good description of the setting as well as the characters for the story. This is a very entertaining quick read. My only disappointment is that I am now at the end of the series and must wait for the next book in the series to come out!

left me anxiously waiting for the next book in the series
This book reads very quickly and it isn't until the last few pages that the culprit emerges...not one of the ones I had been watching. the author did a great job distracting the reader's attention from the evil doer by presenting lots of other possibilities. She also keeps the romance between Piper and Jack alive even though they aren't together in the same city and it is only through phone conversations that the relationship goes through its up and downs. I recommend this book although I still miss the Key News mysteries.

Captured
This is the first book I've read in the series (this is #4). Will go back and read first three. I suspected the murderer, but dismissed the idea. WOW. I should have known better. Love the New Orleans site, good characters, great plot! Recipe was a bonus, but wanted the Banana Foster cake recipe ! Now I must check out the internet for it. Looking forward to more adventures.

Another winner
Once again I enjoyed reading about the situations Piper Donavan gets herself into. Even though voodoo is something I would not be interested in, it was interesting to hear about it from a different perspective
