Cannas are winter hardy in zones 7 and above. In cooler climates, cut off the foliage and dig up the rhizomes in the Fall after the plants have been blackened by frost, shaking off the soil. Store them in barely dampened peat moss or shredded newspaper in a frost-proof place (basement or garage). They can be planted out as soon as the ground has warmed in the spring. Suggested planting rate: one plant per 3 ft²
Notes: Cutting back spent flower stalks to the 2nd or 3rd leaf from the ground will keep your cannas shorter and fuller during the growing season
