Very lightweight, lacks rubber feet or padding. Awesome effects!
Absolutely spectacular gift for any boy or girl or even adult who is fascinated with science and electricity. The ball is amazing! My son saw this at a field trip he had and mentioned it to me. So I knew exactly what he was talking about and I gave it to him as a gift. Unfortunately, my 5 year old daughter was transferring it to another table. She didn't drop it, but her body swiped it and it fell off the table and shattered... Glass everywhere! If it had decent rubber no-slip pads /feet underneath, this would not have happened since she slightly brushed against it with her tiny body. The other thing I wasn't happy with was that the plasma ball would not 'dance' to music. Didn't matter how loud and how many beats, it didn't respond. In that mode, it only responded to someone facing at it with their mouth and yelling. Each yell would cause it to activate for a short burst. That is why I am giving it 4 stars. I accept responsibility and hold myself accountable. But such a lightweight fragile glass device with no sturdy rubber feet to prevent it from sliding? A shame.

works well
This really perks up the kids curiousity for electricity and learn more about tesla coils and how these work. At night the blue bolts in the pinkish plama lights up when the glass is touched and the kids just love it and are almost hypnotized by it. We did try the sound detection mode and it seems like it tries to follow the beat like drums to turn off the power and it turns off the bolts and color between beats. I dont think this works that well but it's a novelty, and can be switched to normal mode where it's just on normally so it doesn't bother me that it's there. Otherwise the 8" version is a great size as a few kids and touch it at the same time.

BEWARE - Did not work out of the box!
Box and contents looked a bit worn and possibly previously opened/used. Plugged in and nothing happened…nothing at all. Tried many outlets and order of connections…nothing. Returned immediately. Will try to reorder once because my kid really wants one and is super beat up about what would have been his favorite Xmas gift not working. If the next one fails, we’re done. Really shouldn’t be such a risk (of inoperability) at this price point of nearly $50!

Its okay for the price.
I purchased a used condition ball that lasted less than one day. It worked at first but shortly after stopped functioning. The ball itself is pretty cheaply made and is fairly light. The base is cheap plastic and ball itself also feels made of very cheap material. As for the effects, it is pretty nice visually and will even light up a bulb when you hold a bulb near it. Its fairly sensitive. Unfortunately, I did was not able to use it for very long before it gave out. Maybe because it was used and already had issues I am not sure. Would I purchase a new one?? Probably not. I would rather save my money and purchase a better quality but more expensive ball that will last longer and is made of more durable material.

Impressed. Fair Price. As Seen in Pictures.
I love plasma globes. I've had a cheap $30ish dollar 4 inch globe by my bed for a few years & decided to upgrade. For about $800CA and above you can buy large museum quality plasma globes. So for $100 I really think this is a wonderful compromise and a fair price. It really is as beautiful as its online picture, which was a pleasant surprise. Its a equally dispersed full web of vibrant blue plasma filaments that turn pink & dance around the perimeter of the globe. Read many reviews before buying. If it quits working or there are any issues I'll definitely update the review, but for now I'm very happy.

Pretty cool, but low touch response
The colours (that change along the surface, like the main pictures show..) don't change over time but are instead some sort of phosphorous coating. It's a neat idea, but also means the voltage needs to be higher to make up for the extra resistance.. which it seems not the case. Too bad.Basically, it's really hard to get the very top to see my touching finger (and make a bolt ⚡).
