Q: does it have a smart card?

No. It has an internal smart card if you like to name it that way. Dish receivers do not use smart cards anymore like in the past. It has an on screen smart card number which you should tell dish network to activate.

Q: Some reviews have stated that even if you purchase the 722K, DishNetwork will still charge you a lease rate, is this correct?

A Dish Supervisor explained that the charges are structured to receivers. The first is free and subsequent receivers carry a monthly charge. The charge is considered as an access charge and not equipment rental. In other words, there is no apparent advantage to purchasing my own vip-722k. I made this purchase based on something that I apparently misunderstood when talking with a Dish representative 2 years ago.

Q: Can you connect to internet via a usb adapter?

I don't believe so. However, for about the same amount of money you could get/create a Wireless Bridge to connect the 722K to your router wirelessly and more reliably. Q: moved my service and now i have a hopper instead of a vip 722. the hopper wants to reformat my older external hard drives that i have saved recording
