Game changer for my smoker!
Using this on my Pit Boss K24 (the Costco one). Before I have always had to be reasonably close to the smoker, or come home to check on it regularly. The FB300 gives me the freedom to leave the house and manage my cook without worry, or to run it overnight without having to get up and check/adjust temperature. The v1.0 app feels pretty basic in terms of features, but the controller is feature-rich. Nonetheless, it is a well-done first version and I assume future versions will improve functionality. It does set and monitor temps well, which ultimately is the purpose.I found the unit to be most effective when I closed the spark plate in front of the blower and adapter plate (more restricted air flow). When the adapter plate was directly feeding the lower damper the blower would permit too much air to come through, even when not running. My grill would continue to heat up when the fan was off, even with the top damper barely cracked. Placing the spark plate in-between solved this issue and temperature control was spot on (I also wedged a few coins in to seal and hold the plates in place). The variable-speed fan does a very nice job of getting to and holding temp. Note that you will want to heat up your grill as normal, rather than going cold-start to cooking temp via the controller.

Bought this to use with my new ceramic kamado grill that I got for Father's Day to help regulate the low smoking. Once I figured out to let the fan do the work it revolutionized the simplicity of smoking. Yes its expensive but so is time and headache of moderating the smoke/heat. The other beauty is that you can keep track of your food temp and grill temp and monitor it on your phone so no worries if you have to leave the house momentarily. Yes, there's a learning curve but once you figure it out for your situation, it's become seamless set up, functionality and use.

"Terrific" with one exception....
As far as maintaining my Kamado Joe's temps, this Flame Boss 300 is terrific! So far I've used it for my last two cooks (pork butt and baby backs), and I can't imagine doing any future long-and-slows without it.The ONLY reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I don't have texting on my phone plan (and don't want it.) So I am unable to receive remote alerts for pit/food temps when they fall/rise within my set parameters. Yes, I AM able to actively monitor the temps via my phone--which is nice--but this still requires I be awake/alert in order to do that monitoring. In other words, I can't yet comfortably do an over-nighter unless I wake up periodically to check my phone for the temps. My best hope is that the software designers at Flame Boss will soon incorporate an audible alarm (or perhaps add email alerts) into a future software update. At that point I will be a 5 star happy pitmistress!!!

Was good... now it’s terrible!
Before the firmware update this thing works amazing! Literally just tried ribs (3-2-1) and set the pit for 240 and walked away... came back out (1hr) later and the flame boss read 210 and the fan was still just blaring full speed. I used another thermometer and the grill was at 339! Ribs are trashed and it’s just the 1st step. Needless to say, the flameboss will not see anymore time from me. Major disappointment!!!

This product has potential, unfortunately I had to return it. Functionally it seems to work well but the PID settings for my grill (XL Big Green Egg) could be much better. There was a lot of unnecessary oscillation before the temperature leveled out. This is of course my opinion as an Electrical Engineer having programmed many PID loops. Also, for the price the probes seemed a bit cheesy and did not have a high enough temperature rating for all grilling applications. With everything said above after 3 or 4 cooks I was pleased enough to keep the unit.Unfortunately on my next cook the unit would not stay powered on. I had to wiggle the connector and then not touch it to get the power to stay on. Clearly the connector was bad or something came loose. At this point after 1 week of ownership I decided to return the unit.At this price point the unit should have better probes and be of a more solid construction. I have no problem shelling out 3 or 4 hundred bills for a cool piece of electronics but it needs to last....

Love the Flame Boss 300
Absolutely love this thing. Was much simpler to setup than its major competitor. From opening the box, power up, entering settings, downloading app and get web logon it wasn't 30 minutes.First smoke after receiving it was 4 butts (30#) overnight smoke. After I got the fire started the second time (my fault), put the butts on, started up the FB300. Was so nice to be able to go visit some friends for several hours, whip out the phone to check everything but because it was a new tool kept checking progress on and off until midnight. Did raise temp up 5 degrees for the last 2 hours but did not have to fret for the 12hrs. Kept the KJ on the target temp and could monitor meat temp. Probably going to get the Y cable.Ordering on Amazon easy peasy, delivered 2 days later without issue.
