This works like a filtration system similar to a fish aquarium. Activated charcoal comes in different sizes. The most productive size would be ones about quarter of an inch in diameter. If the activated charcoal is too powdery it will fall into between the pebbles and you'll lose a much needed layer. Activated charcoal will absorb a lot of bacteria and help stop algae forming.
