A Soul to Keep: Duskwalker Brides, Book 1

Oh, I’m down bad for this series…
I want to throw my TBR out of the window and read this series all the way through. Immediately.📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyna📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: The Duskwalker Brides character series. Book 1.📗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: E-book on Kindle and audio on Hoopla app. 🆓 on KU.📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Paranormal Romance📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Fish out of water, he falls first and HARD.📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Reia is give to a Duskwalker as a sacrifice for her town’s protection. She must live in the Veil with a creature who is nowhere near human, and struggles to accept her fate.🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I was recently inspired - thank you Katie from The Opposites Bookshelf - to take this bad boy off of my TBR, and it was such a good read.Orpheus is everything I want in a monstrous MMC. He’s impossible not to love - both as he pines for companionship and how he structures himself as Reia’s protector. He was so curious and unintentionally funny and grateful and just in awe that he could be loved, and it made my heart melt.Reia was a fun main character as well - her sense of humor had me cackling and I found her relatable to how I’d act in her situation. This one stayed on my TBR so long for length, and I definitely think it was 100 pages too long (really only because I fell in love with this couple so quickly), so that’s where the half point came off. But you won’t get bored… you’ll be feral for more details. If you’re sleeping on this series, pick up book 1 and get on it!𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: 3.5/5 🌶🌶🌶

Surprisingly Good
This was good. I had a good time. I will say that it is kind of weird, and the MMC is in no way human or attractive, but he’s sweet and thoughtful so you get over it.I think if you liked this book/series you would like Ensnared by Tiffany Roberts. It also has a very not human, not handsome MMC.Overall, I had a good time. I’m probably going to read the next book. So, in all, it’s fun. It’s weird. It’s worth the read.4/5 stars

Dark monster romance
I don't even know where to start with this book, the way opal is able to pull you into the world of her book. The building of the world is easy and simple. So you're able to understand what's going on without trying to learn places and time frames, which I've struggled with other books. To me, this is a huge plus. She is so detailed with the building of the characters in this book that you fall for them as you watch them grow together. I wasnt sure what i was getting into with this dark monster romance book but Orpheus made it. The first book made me get hooked on this series. It has made me feel all the emotions, laugh, cry, get angry and if you know why then you know why, cry and lord did I cry. This series in a weird way is a comfort series because opal has made this series so diverse and inclusive. I promise you, you will get hooked.

VERY different and I LOVED IT!
I took a chance on this story and I am so glad I did!! Too often there are paranormal romances that have “monster” type characters and they end up being just like humans.I thought the differences in the Duskwalker were so cool and lived that Reia loved him for himself and didn’t want to change him.Which is what attracts me to these stories to Bergen with - the feelings, passion, and acceptance that develops in the face of awful odds.We are all lovable and deserve love.I loved Orpheus he was so charming, sweet and protective. I’m so very glad he got his happy lay ever after.

Not the best
First, the story is great. Which, if it’s a published fanfiction of The Ancient Magus’ Bride, it already had something good to build off of. I wouldn’t call it a fanfiction if the author didn’t explicitly say in the authors note it took inspo from TAMB and Demon Slayer (separate words, btw). Speaking of the demonslayers, they appeared once for drama and for the FMC to say “I wanted to be one of those,” with no other hint before that she did. They served no other purpose other than a winky face at the reader. If there had been an editor, the book would’ve lost at least 100 pages from cutting up unnecessarily long sentences, that could’ve conveyed the same information with *less* detail, as well as removing repetitive descriptions. If you forgot what Orpheus looked like after his first transformation, it gets almost copy-pasted for the second - minus the mention of his cloak being left around his neck, which wasn’t even a necessary addition. There were times that I was engrossed in the story - again, great premise - but the writing would take me out of it because of a random unnecessarily long description, or a missing word, or a word that isn’t even a word. It very much needed that editor.Realistically I give this a 2.5, but rounding up because I actually adored Orpheus. He was doing his best. Reia is kind of stupid and doesn’t listen very well, but I guess that’s kind of her point. She deserved what happened after leaving the castle. Did she learn? Probably not. I only hope the next book is written better.

rainy day Halloween book.
I call this my rainy day Halloween book for all the right reasons. It’s cozy, it’s loving, with a great plot and a beautiful romance. It’s funny. The characters are unique and endearing and it takes a whole new spin on the fantasy characters and folklore that we know and love. I appreciate the author for respecting cultures while making certain creatures her own. Great way to do it.

Really strange
The story is a really strange beauty and the beast story. Except I think this one was scarier. The world building was so good that it left me with more questions I wanted answered. Maybe I might read the next book?

A must read for monster lovers
This is, by far, the best monster love story I've read. What I love the most is the dark fantasy world the writer created, the details about it that unfold from chapter to chapter, the monsters, races and magic and how everything works. It has a creepy vibe, and I'm all here for it.The smut is top tier, of course, but it's not the only focus of the story, which I REALLY appreciate. It did take a while for the plot to actually start getting really interesting, the main conflicts only appear near the end. But if you'd like to read about the daily life of a monster and his bride, I'm sure you'll love it (I sure did).I THOUGHT I spotted some gramatical mistakes, but upon looking it up I realized they are just differences between USA and UK (I believe?) english. As a non native speaker, I was wrong in my ignorance, and happy to have looked it up and understand this. Look stuff up and study before criticizing an author, everyone!Anyways, this was the perfect introduction for the Duskwalker Brides series. I love the characters (the fierce and brave Reia and the proud and lonely Orpheus are amazing), and I'm very glad to have picked this up.Can't thank the author enough for writing this.(Sorry for any mistakes. As I mentioned, english is not my native language!)

Not impressed
I hv e seen so many people like this book but I was not impressed at all.The pacing felt off and I didn't like the writing at all.I liked the worldbuilding and the idea about the characters and mosters in the world.But... There are so many issues with the relationships with Orpheus, Reia and Katerina. Do we want a MMC who imprints on anyone with the most apparent criteria being they don't fear him?
