Child in School? You need this.
Edit to update- 2/15/18 (1 year later) My son is in the middle of first grade now. His first grade teacher has found this just as helpful as his kindergarten teacher. I stand by how amazing this product is and how much it has helped us. This year we had a new nurse at school. Since my son doesn’t audibly wheeze we were having issues with her making sure to give him his medicine when needed. You can see how this is very upsetting. After a serious “come to Jesus meeting” and even having our allergist send in a drs note informing her she needs to use this device, I can happily say my son is given his medicine whenever he needs it now.I want to clarify that I paid full price for this product, am not affiliated in any way with the company and just hope my review and all its details can help other families. My son started kindergarten this year and we've had the hardest time getting him to take his medicine at school when he needs it. 2 reasons- 1) he's 5. And honestly he just doesn't fully understand asthma and their attacks yet. 2) he doesn't have an audible wheeze like so many people do when they have attacks. Honestly until I learned his cues I had a hard time myself realizing he was having an attack until it was a full blown issue. I knew there had to be something out there to help parents out in situations like this. Like so many of us do I went to google. I found flow meters and then came to Amazon to read reviews and order one. That's when a miracle happened. During my Amazon searching I found this device. The way it works is you have the device set to a number that your WELL child can make whistle. (Our number is actually a little lower than the brochure suggest). If the child can make the whistle sound them they are perfect and good to go! If the whistling is very light you should start you asthma plan. If there is no whistling then you are in full blown asthma mode. I was a little hesitant because no other flow meters made audible sounds and the price was fairly cheap. I purchased a regular meter and I took a chance with this. We've had it for a month now and this thing has been through the ringer that's for sure! During this month spring has decided to come early, my son had a respiratory virus which was triggering AWFUL asthma attacks and he's been perfectly well. This device got me a phone call from the teacher and the nurse thanking me for finding something like this and telling me how much it has helped them. Even after the virus was over he was still having some attacks at school. (He keeps this in his backpack) Luckily our nurse is familiar with children who don't wheeze, but his teacher is not. She has praised this and said that it's helped her so much! During this month he's obviously seen his pediatrician since he was sick and she was delighted there was something like this on the market that could help children know without a doubt if they needed help. His allergist was also very happy to find out about it. Both doctors have said they will be recommending this product for people who have children who suffer from asthma.I really hope this review helps someone else with their child. Asthma can be such a scary and confusing thing. Especially if the child is too young to fully explain their issue and if a parent themselves has never experienced asthma.I will update the review if the device fails or something happens. But honestly I don't see how it could.

Great product
Great tool to manage my young ones asthma!! Helps know if he is breathing okay and when to go to the doctor.

Useful, but not much
It does not really measure the peak flow, but it helps to know if it can reach the previously delimited peak. For those who have contact with children is more useful because the sound it emits is striking and in some cases knowing if the child is getting worse is more important to know the exact level.

Best medical tool I've found for asthma
I love how simple this is to user, and effective it is as well. I've taken it to my doctors for review ams now the pediatrician is recommending this product to others patients

There are better options
Buy Assess Peak Flow Meter instead. This is just a toy.

Doesn't work as intended, readings are not accurate.
Not worth it. My son has severe allergies and asthma. I thought this would be good to keep with me this summer when we are at the park or pool or wherever since it doesn't require batteries that explode in the heat, however it is not accurate.

cute asthma whistle tells you if kids OK
Follow the instructions and set this to your kid's doctor's specifications by turning the top wheel to the right number. I just read the instructions myself and set it to her weight; since she is an adult now, I used the highest setting. But the instructions say to have your doctor do it. Then you lock down the lever and leave it until kids gets bigger and needs it changed. I suggest you blow through it BEFORE setting it, once, so you all hear the whistle; it sounds a little strange. THEN set it, because if your kid is having problems, they can't make it whistle right and you will know the difference in sounds. It fits in a pocket easily, less then 1 1/2" in diameter and 3 inches long. I like it better then the official-looking doctor-supplied peak flow meter; it is not so intimidating-looking. Although, I wish the colors used in the plastic were not so 1980's looking. You could see Clarie Huxtable's kids using this. I bought two, one for my kid at college, and one for our house since a grandkid also has asthma, it's cheap enough to have another one around. I would use it if I thought my kid MIGHT be a little wheezy; if they can't make it whistle, then you get the official peak flow meter or even an oximeter to test how much oxygen they are getting; then it's time for treatment or a trip to ER! Kids hate having to use the official meters but a whistle, in front of their peers, is not so embarrassing, especially at a game.
