Pleasantly surprised!
First of all I was pleasantly surprised to find this square is made of stainless steel rather than aluminum. To me this is a better, more durable and quality material than aluminum. Apparently this is a recent change as the reviews I read all indicated it was made of heavy gauge aluminum. All the numbers are large and easily read and very sharp. Accuracy appears to be spot on from the limited checks I’ve made so far. Although the base plate is plastic it seems to be of a very resilient type that can stand impact. It fits very snuggly to the main square with NO play whatever. One reason I chose this square was because of the integral spirit level and this one seems to be accurate. Also a small built-in stainless ruler held in place by a strong magnet is another useful addition. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase and expect to get many years of service from it. For the money I believe it’s hard to beat!

Great concept, a bit of refining and it would be more functional
As a professional carpenter I can't tell you how many of this type square I've owned or still do over the past 50 years. I was introduced to the Swanson speed square when I joined a new roughing crew around 48 years ago. Each one I've owned after that has brought either a slightly or significantly different twist to the old standard that I felt was worth trying, and this is no exception. I shelved buying this for a while just because of the price, and I do feel it's pricey for what it is compared to similar offerings. But that aside I'm quite pleased with this tool. The square and level both appear to be accurate when compared to other tools of this nature and its graduations (white on black) are easy to read although they appear to be painted on so time will tell if they hold up. The square is magnetic so it's not aluminum if that matters to anyone. While a 6" hook rule is a staple on my tool belt this little 4" rule has its advantages. The way it glides smoothly in its track and stays put on the magnet allows this to be used as a depth or thickness gauge and makes some operations that much easier, like setting the height of a table saw blade or router bit. As an example, for building window/door jamb extensions I will typically lay a square across the inside finished wall surface then use a 6" rule to measure the difference between the square and window/door to find the jamb extension width. This requires two hands, two tools and it can be in an inconvenient position to read the scale. With this square held against the finished wall surface its little scale can be slid out with a thumb until it contacts the window/door, then it will stay put so that dimension can be read in a comfortable position, fast and easy. That's just one instance of many where this feature is useful. For my purposes the detachable base feature will most likely go unused, but we'll see. What I'm very pleased about is it attaches solidly without any rattle or wobble at all which is a necessity. The two areas I feel need improvement are the square itself is only .82" thick, which is just under 3/32" (or less than 1/8" for non-carpenters). In recent years I've developed the habit of using my "speed square" for a saw guide rather than follow a line and this thickness doesn't give the saw shoe much to be guided by. I get why most rulers are graduated in both imperial and metric but at only 1/2" wide this clutters the scale with numbers and graduations. It would be a lot easier to read if the scale only had one system or the other, not both, or even one side dedicated to each system. Currently its back side is blank. With a triangle file I made a little notch in the end of it to capture the tip of a pencil for scribing a line parallel to an edge. Otherwise this has all the features you'd expect to find on a square of this nature and more. If this was made of aluminum it could be thicker and still weigh less than this does. A little refinement would make it easier to use and improve its value.

Nice price.
Very nice speed square. I do mostly metal working so I needed one that was magnetic. I also think the stainless steel rule will came in handy. The plastic base is removable so if I use it on the welding table I can avoid melting it. Nice that it also contains a level. One less tool to haul around while building my project's.At the low cost of this tool I can afford to replace it if it goes out of square in a few years. I may buy a couple more as I have a basement shop, A garage and a pole building and it would be handy to have one in each shop.

Magnet.
Overall I like the square. Easy to read. Nice size. Nice feel. The best feature in the level installed. However the the base from the pivot point it too big. Thin that down some and install a bigger magnet. A longer one that holds on to more of that 4 inch extension piece. I dropped my bags on my drive way and ping piece gone. Or make it so the piece slides in and locks to the magnet rather than just laying on the side of the base of the square. Hope this helps thanks.

Husband loves this!
This had been on my husband’s Christmas list for a year, and I finally decided to buy it for a stocking stuffer, when it came in, he saw it, and it never made it into the stocking. He has now gone to work on a Sunday at 7am and last I saw of him he was buckling his new square into the passenger seat. Sounded like the two in one option to measure the depth with the attaching mini ruler was a selling point.

Handy device
Multi functional, well built, accurate measuring device. I use it quite often to check the accuracy of hanging objects and confirm measurement. Very useful item.

Great martinez alternative
Very impressed with this square do far. I originally bought it just hoping for a cheaper alternative to the crazy expensive martinez squares out there. I would recommend this one for sure for those of you out there who would like a level built into your speed square. But where it falls short for me is that the numbers and markings seem only painted on rather than etched or grooved in place. I would have gave it a 5 star if not for this detail. I'll update my review after a use the square more. Hopefully the paint doesn't chip off too fast and i'll have more positive things to say... also the ruler feature seems intriguing. I hope the magnet is strong enough to keep it secure and not have it fall off and get lost... we'll see.
